Plan My Drive — Every Country's Rules & Costs for Your Road Trip

Planning a drive across a few countries means juggling half a dozen different rulebooks — one country wants an emission sticker, the next a motorway vignette, a third makes winter tyres compulsory from a certain date. Plan My Drive puts all of it on one screen. Tell it your car and the countries you’ll cross, and it works out exactly what your vehicle needs in each one — stickers, vignettes, winter tyres, mandatory kit, speed and alcohol limits — with the official links to sort each one.

Your TyreMap Drive Score

Every result carries a TyreMap Drive Score from 0 to 100 — a single number for how freely your car can drive there. 100 means no emission-zone limits (or an exempt electric car); a score in the amber range means you get in but need a sticker or only clear the more lenient zones; a low score means your car is shut out of the strictest zones. The overall route score is the average across every country you add — a quick read on how road-trip-friendly your car is this year.

What Plan My Drive checks in each country

For every country you add, the planner pulls together the six things that actually catch drivers out abroad:

  • Emission zones — how many the country has, the Euro class its strictest zone demands, and whether your fuel-and-year combination clears it. Where a sticker is needed, it links the official shop directly.
  • Motorway payment — vignette (with the current 2026 short-stay price), pay-as-you-go toll booths, or free.
  • Winter tyres — whether they’re mandatory or situational, the seasonal window, and the fine for getting it wrong — flagged against your travel month.
  • Mandatory equipment — the items you’re legally required to carry, which vary from a single warning triangle to a breathalyser.
  • Speed and alcohol limits — town, open-road and motorway limits, the blood-alcohol ceiling, and which side of the road you’ll be on.
  • Speeding penalty — the typical fine for 20 km/h over, so a moment’s inattention doesn’t blindside you.

How your Euro emission class is worked out

Emission zones judge a car by its Euro standard, printed on your registration document. If you don’t know yours, the first-registration year is a reliable guide:

First registeredEuro class
2015 or laterEuro 6
2011–2014Euro 5
2006–2010Euro 4
2001–2005Euro 3
1997–2000Euro 2
Before 1997Euro 1

Diesels are usually held to a higher standard than petrol cars in the same zone, which is why a 2012 diesel (Euro 5) can be waved through one city and turned away by the next. Fully electric cars are treated as exempt almost everywhere. When a zone’s rule is borderline for your car, the planner tells you to check the specific city — because a single country can run zones with different thresholds.

These are the corridors drivers ask about most. Tap any preset in the planner above to load the whole route in one click — here’s what trips people up on each.

France → Spain — Both run low-emission zones (France’s Crit’Air, Spain’s ZBE in Barcelona, Madrid and beyond), so an older diesel needs checking at each end. France charges distance-based motorway tolls; Spain mixes tolls with free stretches. Winter tyres only bite in the Pyrenees.

Germany → Austria → Italy — The classic Alpine run has three different systems back to back: a green Umweltplakette for German cities, an Austrian motorway vignette (from €9.90) plus compulsory winter tyres from November, and Italy’s camera-enforced ZTL zones in the historic centres.

UK → France → Italy — Remember you’re switching to the right after the Channel. England’s Clean Air Zones, France’s Crit’Air sticker and tolls, then Italy’s ZTL permits — three separate rulebooks, and the planner flags each for your car.

Denmark → Sweden → Norway — Scandinavia is light on emission zones but strict on winter tyres, with long mandatory seasons the further north you go. Norway’s cities charge automatic toll-ring fees by camera rather than a vignette.

Netherlands → Belgium → Luxembourg — Compact but zone-heavy: Amsterdam, Brussels and Antwerp all run low-emission zones with camera enforcement, so an older diesel can be fined three times in a single day. Motorways here are toll-free.

Croatia → Slovenia → Austria — Two vignette countries in a row (Slovenia and Austria), each sold separately, plus Croatia’s distance-based tolls. Slovenia’s fines for driving without a vignette are among Europe’s steepest.

Frequently asked questions

How does Plan My Drive know what my car needs? You give it two things — fuel type and first-registration year — and it derives your Euro class, then compares that to the strictest zone on each leg of your route.

Does it cover stickers and vignettes? Yes: emission stickers (with the official shop link, so you skip the markup resellers), plus whether each country uses a vignette, a toll booth, or free motorways, with the 2026 short-stay vignette price.

Can I trust the numbers? Every figure comes from our dated country database, and each result links the official government source. Rules and prices move, so use this as your shortlist and confirm the specifics for your city and dates before you set off.

Which countries are covered? All of Europe plus anywhere with an emission zone or toll system — 67 countries. Add as many as your trip needs.
