UAE Tyre Rules 2026: Heat, Pressure and 1.6 mm Tread

The UAE has no winter-tyre rule, no seasonal window and nothing to swap. The only tread figure that binds is 1.6 mm. Everything else that matters about tyres here comes down to one thing: heat, and what it does to an under-inflated casing at 120 km/h.

Pressure Is the Safety Item, Not Tread

A tyre carrying less pressure than it should flexes more through the sidewall. Flexing generates heat. Add a road surface that can pass 60°C in July and an ambient temperature in the high forties, and the result is a casing running far above its design temperature — which is why UAE blowouts cluster in summer and on the motorway rather than in town.

Nothing about tread depth prevents that. A monthly cold pressure check does. Measure before the car has been driven, use the figure on the door pillar rather than the number moulded into the sidewall, and check the spare at the same time.

Tread Depth and Sudden Rain

The legal minimum is 1.6 mm, measured across the central three-quarters of the tread. The case for replacing at 3 mm is specific to this climate: the UAE goes months without rain and then gets a great deal of it at once, onto roads coated in dust and oil.

Fog is the other seasonal hazard, particularly in winter mornings inland, and it produces the multi-vehicle pile-ups the UAE is known for. Tyres do not help with visibility; braking distance is the only part of that chain they touch.

Heat Ageing

• Rubber hardens before the tread wears out. A tyre with plenty of depth and several summers behind it has already lost grip. Read the DOT code
• Check the spare. It sits in a hot boot doing nothing and is routinely the worst tyre on the car
• Sand reduces traction. Blown sand on tarmac acts like a dry lubricant, especially on unlit roads out of town
• Day-to-night swings move pressure. A 30°C spread between afternoon and dawn is enough to change readings materially

Enforcement and Penalties

Tyre condition is treated as a vehicle-safety matter and checked at roadside stops. For a sense of how seriously ordinary offences are taken here: a seatbelt violation is AED 400 with four black points, and running a red light is AED 1,000, twelve black points and a 30-day vehicle impoundment.

The alcohol rule is the one visitors most need to understand. FCDO travel advice states that it is illegal to drink and drive no matter how small the amount, and that insurance is likely to be invalidated in the event of an accident.

Roads and Driving Culture

FCDO advice notes that driving standards are not always as disciplined as in the UK and that the traffic accident rate is high. Two specifics are worth carrying with you: flashing headlights here usually means the driver behind is coming through, not that they are giving way; and offensive gestures directed at other drivers can lead to fines, a jail sentence and possible deportation.

How the UAE Compares to Its Neighbours

The UAE has two land borders, and both share the same picture — no winter rule, heat as the governing factor:

• Saudi Arabia: no winter-tyre requirement, no published national tread figure, motorways at 120 km/h with 140 km/h on some intercity routes
• Oman: no winter-tyre requirement, tread minimum 1.6 mm, motorways at 120 km/h
