Sudan Tyre Rules 2026: 1.6 mm and Seven Land Borders

Between the Nubian Desert and the Sahel, nothing in the Sudanese rulebook asks about a season. There is no winter tyre window, no marking requirement and no stud category.

The tread floor is 1.6 mm in the main grooves, the international reference set out in Council Directive 89/459/EEC. What decides whether a tyre survives here is heat, dust and distance.

Heat is the load case

Khartoum summers run above 40 degrees for weeks, and the asphalt runs far hotter than the air. Three things follow, and none of them are about grip:

• Pressure climbs. A tyre set correctly at dawn is well above that figure by mid-afternoon. Setting hot to a cold figure is how people end up dangerously under-inflated the next morning.
• The compound softens. Wear accelerates, and a cut or a bulge that would sit stable in a temperate climate propagates instead.
• Age beats mileage. Ultraviolet exposure and sustained heat oxidise rubber regardless of how far the car has been driven. The four-digit DOT code is the number to check, not the odometer.

The haboob

In the early summer, collapsing thunderstorms push a wall of dust ahead of them across the central belt. Visibility goes from clear to nothing in minutes, and the right response is to get off the carriageway entirely rather than to crawl along it with hazards on.

The residue is the part that affects tyres. Fine abrasive sand works into every tread cut and every seal, and it enlarges damage that would otherwise have stayed stable. Picking stones and grit out of the tread at each fuel stop is a small habit that pays here.

Seven land borders

Sudan borders more countries than almost anywhere else in the region, and none of them applies a seasonal tyre rule:

• Egypt: to the north, on the Nile corridor. Tread floor 1.6 mm.
• Libya: to the north-west, across open desert. Tread floor 1.6 mm.
• Chad: to the west, through Darfur. Tread floor 1.6 mm.
• Central African Republic: to the south-west. Tread floor 1.6 mm.
• South Sudan: to the south. Tread floor 1.6 mm.
• Ethiopia: to the south-east, where the ground begins to climb. Tread floor 1.6 mm.
• Eritrea: to the east, towards the Red Sea coast. Tread floor 1.6 mm.

A shared border is not the same as an open road. Crossing status changes, and it is worth confirming before a border becomes part of a route.
