The wet season is the whole story
Between about May and October this is one of the wettest coastlines in West Africa, and July and August are the peak. The consequences for a driver are specific:
- Laterite changes character completely. Dry, it is fast and comfortable. Wet, it is slick, deeply rutted by traffic and prone to washing out at the edges.
- Standing water on the sealed corridor. The Freetown to Bo and Kenema road carries speed, and speed plus depth of water is where worn tread stops being a paperwork issue.
- Repairs lag the season. A route that was graded in the dry season may not have been touched since the rains started.
Then the harmattan arrives
From roughly December to February the wind reverses and brings Saharan dust down the coast. Visibility drops to a flat haze, fine grit gets into everything, and rubber and seals dry out faster than usual.
It is the mirror image of the wet season and it arrives just as reliably. The habit that covers both is the same: inspect the tread and the sidewalls regularly, and check the four-digit DOT code rather than trusting the odometer, because this climate ages rubber on its own schedule.
