Malawi Tyre Rules 2026: Tread Depth Is the Only Test

Malawi’s tyre rules contain no winter tyre mandate and no studded tyre category, and there is no seasonal marking to look for on a sidewall. That leaves one number: tread depth. Malawi does not publish a figure of its own online, and 1.6 mm is the international benchmark this page works to — the same floor applied in the EU and the UK.

Why Winter Tyres Never Enter the Conversation

Malawi is a tropical country running from the Shire Valley at around 100 m to the Nyika Plateau above 2,000 m. Even the cool season on the plateau does not produce the sustained sub-zero conditions a winter compound is designed for, and no Malawian rule asks for one.

The advice you will see on generic tyre pages — switch below 7 °C, look for an M+S stamp — belongs to northern Europe. It has no application here, and fitting a soft winter compound in Malawian heat would simply wear it out.

Tread Depth in Malawi

Work to 1.6 mm as the floor. Measure across the central three-quarters of the tread, around the full circumference, and take the shallowest reading you find rather than an average.

Change earlier than the floor. Wet grip does not decline in a straight line as tread wears: the drop is gentle from 8 mm to 4 mm and then steepens sharply, which is why fitters across the region change at 3 mm rather than running a tyre down to the legal edge. In a country where a dry road becomes a sheet of running water in ten minutes, that margin is the whole point.

What Happens if Your Tyres Are Illegal

Two things, and the second costs more. A police check can fine you. An insurer, after a collision, can look at the tyre that failed and reduce or refuse the claim — and that exposure does not depend on whether anyone stopped you beforehand.

Tyre Advice for Malawi’s Conditions

Malawi is landlocked. The terrain runs from the Lake Malawi shore and the Shire Valley up to the Nyika and Zomba plateaus, and the tyre priorities are rain, heat and stones rather than cold.

• Wet grip first. Heavy seasonal downpours are the norm from November to April, and drainage outside the cities is poor
• Change at 3 mm, not at the floor, if you drive in the rains at all
• Heat and UV age rubber faster here than in a temperate climate. A five-year-old tyre can look fine and have lost a good deal of its grip
• Check pressure cold, in the morning, before the day’s heat has built up in the carcass

Road Conditions and Tyre Wear in Malawi

Off the M1 and the main lake road, surfaces deteriorate quickly — potholes, loose gravel and unpaved stretches on secondary routes to places like Liwonde, Nyika and Cape Maclear.

What that means for tyres:

• Carry a full-size spare. A space-saver is not enough when the nearest fitter is 80 km away
• Inspect sidewalls at the end of each day on gravel — sidewall cuts, not punctures, are what strand people
• On soft sand or deep gravel, drop pressure by 0.2–0.3 bar for traction, then reinflate as soon as you are back on tarmac
