Hungary Winter Tyres 2026-27: No Law, 1.6 mm Still Applies

Hungary requires winter tyres on no date and in no condition: the KRESZ road code sets neither a seasonal window nor a snow-and-ice trigger, and the 2026 amendments did not add one. What the law does enforce all year is the 1.6 mm minimum tread depth and an outright ban on studded tyres, with snow chains obligatory only on the stretches where a sign says so — which leaves the 4.0 mm winter floor a matter of grip rather than of fines.

There are no key dates in Hungary for 2026–27, because there is no mandate to start or end. Cold snaps typically begin in late October or November, and most local drivers switch tyres during October for grip rather than for the law.

• Studded tyres are prohibited whatever the weather.
• Renting a car for travel between November and March? Nothing obliges the rental firm to supply winter tyres here, so ask for them in writing if you want them.

Winter Tyre Requirements in Hungary

Hungary has no winter tyre requirement. There is no fixed period, and no conditions clause that switches the obligation on when snow or ice appears — unlike Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia next door.

That makes the choice yours. Hungarian winters are continental, with frost from November and snow on the higher roads of the north and the Bakony, so winter or all-season tyres remain the sensible fit from roughly November to March, particularly if your route leaves the motorway network.

Tyres on sale for winter use here normally carry: the M+S marking, although the law asks for none.

Minimum Tread Depth in Hungary

In Hungary, the legal minimum tyre tread depth is 1.6 mm, measured across the central three-quarters of the tread width around the full circumference — the floor the EU’s tyre directive sets for every member state.

For Hungary’s roads, the practical replacement threshold for a winter tyre is 4.0 mm, well above the legal minimum. With motorway limits of 130 km/h, adequate tread is critical: aquaplaning risk rises sharply on a wet motorway, and a tyre near the legal floor cannot channel water fast enough.

Studded Tyres in Hungary

Studded tyres are prohibited in Hungary. The ban reflects the cost of stud damage to asphalt. If you need maximum ice grip, look for friction winter tyres (sometimes called “Nordic compound” tyres) with the 3PMSF symbol.

All-Season Tyres in Hungary

All-season tyres are legal in Hungary, as any road-legal tyre is: no marking is mandated here. Many local drivers still fit dedicated winter tyres from autumn through spring. All-seasons are a reasonable choice if your driving is mostly on main roads and you avoid the hill country in snow.

Penalties for Tyre Violations in Hungary

Tyre violations in Hungary carry fines and may affect your licence. For context on enforcement severity: a seatbelt violation costs HUF 30,000 (approx. EUR 75), so expect tyre offences to be taken at least as seriously.

On-the-spot fines: Hungary issues fines at the roadside. Carry sufficient cash or a card to pay immediately.

Visitors take note: Hungary enforces tyre rules on foreign-plated vehicles just as strictly as on domestic ones.

An unpaid tyre fine is not something the EU chases automatically. The cross-border traffic directive (2015/413) lists eight offences — speeding, red lights, drink-driving and the like — and tyre violations are not among them. What can happen is slower and less certain: a notice reaching your address through commercial tracing, or, for fines above EUR 70, the general mutual-recognition route between EU states. On a hire car it is simpler — the rental company charges your card under the contract.

Tyre Strategy for Hungary’s Climate

Hungary has a continental climate with distinct seasons. This has direct implications for tyre choice:

• Frost season: summer tyre compound stiffens in the cold. Winter tyres are not just about snow, they are about temperature. Fit them before the first frost if you want them
• Ice risk: black ice forms on bridges and overpasses first. Even with winter tyres, reduce speed on cold mornings
• Salt and grit: winter road treatments corrode wheels and damage tyre sidewalls over time. Wash your wheels regularly through winter
• Storage: when you swap tyres seasonally, store the off-season set in a cool, dark place

Road Conditions and Tyre Wear in Hungary

Hungary has a well-maintained road network. Tyre wear tends to be predictable and even on main roads. Sustained motorway driving at 130 km/h increases centre-tread wear. Rotate tyres every 8,000–10,000 km for even wear across all four positions.
