Bosnia Winter Tyres 2026: 1 Nov-1 Apr, M+S Tyres or Chains

Winter equipment is compulsory across Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1 November to 1 April, whatever the weather on the day. BIHAMK, the national automobile club, gives the window as 1.11. to 1.4. and closed the 2025-26 season on 1 April 2026, so the April Easter trip that fell inside an older “15 April” version of this rule now falls outside it.

The rule offers three ways to be legal, and only one of them involves a tread figure above 1.6 mm. Studded tyres are banned outright.

Tyre Law Summary for Bosnia and Herzegovina

Winter Equipment Requirements in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Between 1 November and 1 April a car must have one of these:

1. Winter tyres on all four wheels, marked MS, M+S, M&S, Snow, Winter or similar
2. Winter tyres on the drive wheels, plus snow chains or another traction device ready to fit to at least two drive wheels
3. Summer tyres with at least 4 mm of tread on every wheel, plus chains or another traction device for at least two drive wheels

The obligation is date-based, not weather-based, and it applies to foreign-registered cars exactly as it applies to local ones. A 3PMSF snowflake tyre normally carries M+S as well and is accepted.

Practical points:

• Fit before the window opens. Fitters in Sarajevo, Banja Luka and Mostar are booked solid through late October
• If you are crossing on summer tyres, the chains are not optional: without them, even new summer tyres do not comply
• The M5 and the routes over the Vlašić and Romanija passes can close to cars without chains after heavy snow

Tread Depth in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Two numbers apply:

• 1.6 mm — the general floor, measured across the central three-quarters of the tread around the full circumference
• 4 mm — the minimum for summer tyres used under option 3 between 1 November and 1 April

Measure with a gauge and take the shallowest reading, not an average. Grip on wet and snowy roads falls away well before the legal floor, so a winter tyre close to 1.6 mm is legal but a poor tool for a mountain crossing.

At the 130 km/h motorway limit on the A1, tyre condition stops being paperwork. Braking energy rises with the square of speed, so a worn tread costs far more distance at motorway speed than in town.

Studded Tyres in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Prohibited. A modern friction winter tyre is the alternative, and on the cleared main roads where most of a Bosnian winter drive happens, it is the better tyre anyway.

All-Season Tyres in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Accepted during the winter period when they carry an M+S-type marking, which most all-season tyres do. An all-season tyre without that marking counts as a summer tyre, so it needs 4 mm of tread and chains on board.

Penalties for Tyre Violations in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Driving without the required winter equipment during the period is an offence and is enforced at the roadside, with fines issued on the spot. Carry a means of paying immediately.

The larger exposure is the insurance one. After a collision in the winter period, non-compliant equipment gives an insurer a straightforward reason to reduce or refuse a claim, and that applies whether or not anyone stopped you beforehand.

Tyre Considerations for Bosnia’s Conditions

The country is more mountainous than most visitors expect, and conditions diverge sharply between the Neretva valley and the interior.

• Mostar and the Herzegovina lowlands can be mild while the road over to Sarajevo is under snow on the same afternoon
• Wet autumn and winter roads demand depth — do not run a tyre to the floor before replacing it
• Cold takes pressure out of a tyre. Check monthly, always cold
• For mountain routes or frequent winter driving, a dedicated winter tyre beats an all-season by a wide margin

Road Conditions and Tyre Wear in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Surfaces run from good motorway near Sarajevo and Banja Luka to narrow, broken rural roads with unmade edges.

• Potholes and broken edges cause sidewall damage — inspect after rough sections
• Reinforced sidewalls are worth considering for extended travel outside the main cities
• Carry a repair kit and compressor alongside the spare

How Bosnia Compares to Its Neighbours

Bosnia and Herzegovina borders Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro. All three have winter rules of their own:

• Croatia: winter equipment 15 November – 15 April. Studded tyres prohibited.
• Serbia: winter equipment required in winter conditions. Studded tyres prohibited.
• Montenegro: winter equipment 15 November – 1 April. Studded tyres prohibited.

A car heading for Croatia in early April is past Bosnia’s window but still inside Croatia’s, so keep the winter set on until the trip is over.
