M+S (Mud and Snow) Marking

Important: The M+S marking is self-declared by the manufacturer. There is no standardized performance test required to use this symbol. This means the actual winter performance of M+S tyres can vary significantly between manufacturers and models.

What M+S means in practice:

  • The tread pattern has larger gaps and deeper grooves for better grip on soft surfaces
  • Performance in mud and light snow is improved over summer tyres

3PMSF (Three Peak Mountain Snowflake)

3PMSF Certification: The tyre must achieve a braking index of at least 1.10 compared to a reference tyre in standardized snow conditions. This provides objective, measurable proof of winter capability.

DOT Date Code — How to Check Tyre Age

Every tyre has a DOT (Department of Transportation) code on its sidewall. The last four digits tell you when the tyre was manufactured:

Tyre age guidelines:

  • 0-5 years: Normal use. Inspect regularly for wear and damage.
  • 5-6 years: Have tyres professionally inspected annually.
  • 6-10 years: Consider replacement even if tread depth appears adequate. Rubber degrades over time, reducing grip and increasing blowout risk.
  • 10+ years: Replace immediately. Most tyre manufacturers and safety organizations recommend a maximum tyre age of 10 years.

EU Tyre Label System

Since 2012, all tyres sold in the European Union must carry a standardized label (updated in 2021). The label rates three key performance areas:

Fuel Efficiency (A to E): Rolling resistance affects fuel consumption. An A-rated tyre can save approximately 7.5% fuel compared to an E-rated tyre.

Wet Grip (A to E): Braking performance on wet roads. The difference between A and E ratings can be up to 18 metres of stopping distance at 80 km/h.

External Noise (dB): The noise level the tyre produces, measured in decibels. Lower is quieter. Class A (quiet) to Class C (loud).

Additionally, the updated 2021 label includes:

  • Snow grip icon (3PMSF) — if applicable
  • Ice grip icon — for tyres tested on ice (Nordic use)

Summer vs Winter vs All-Season Tyres

Summer Tyres

Designed for temperatures above 7°C. Summer tyres use a harder rubber compound that provides excellent grip on dry and wet roads in warm conditions but becomes dangerously rigid in cold weather. They have shallower tread patterns optimized for water evacuation and road contact.

Winter Tyres

Engineered for temperatures below 7°C. Winter tyres use a softer rubber compound with higher silica content that maintains flexibility in freezing temperatures. The tread features thousands of tiny slits (sipes) that create additional gripping edges on snow and ice. They carry M+S and/or 3PMSF markings.

All-Season Tyres

A compromise between summer and winter performance, suitable for mild climates with moderate winters. They use a medium-hardness compound and feature moderate siping. Quality all-season tyres may carry both M+S and 3PMSF markings. They are best for regions where temperatures rarely drop below -10°C and heavy snowfall is uncommon.

When to Replace Your Tyres

Replace your tyres when any of these conditions apply:

  • Tread depth at 3 mm — Do not wait for the legal minimum of 1.6 mm. At 3 mm, wet-weather performance is already significantly reduced.
  • Age over 6 years — Even with adequate tread, rubber compounds degrade. Check the DOT code.
  • Visible damage — Cuts, cracks, bulges, or exposed cords on the sidewall mean immediate replacement.
  • Uneven wear — This indicates alignment or suspension issues. Fix the root cause and replace the tyre.
  • Vibration — Persistent vibration may indicate internal tyre damage (belt separation).
  • Failed repair — Puncture repairs in the sidewall or near the tyre edge are not safe. Replace the tyre.
Pro tip: When replacing tyres, always replace in pairs (both front or both rear) at minimum. For best handling and safety, replace all four tyres at the same time. If replacing only two, fit the newer tyres on the rear axle for better stability.

The two winter marks on a sidewall do not mean the same thing: M+S is a manufacturer’s own declaration with no test behind it, while 3PMSF is awarded only after a standardised snow-braking test — which is why Germany has required 3PMSF on newly produced winter tyres since 2024. The size code reads in order, so 205/55 R16 91V is a 205 mm tread width, a 55% aspect ratio, a radial casing on a 16-inch rim, load index 91 and a V speed rating. Age hides in the DOT stamp: its last four digits are week and year, so 2523 was built in week 25 of 2023, and rubber older than 6 to 10 years is due for replacement whatever the tread depth says.
