The ceiling for posted motorway limits is 140 km/h, used in the UAE, on some Polish expressways and in Bulgaria, while parts of the German Autobahn enforce nothing at all and merely advise 130 km/h. Weather moves the line too: France drops its motorway limit from 130 to 110 km/h in rain, and variable signs override the default elsewhere. This map colours every country by its urban, rural or motorway default, with a toggle between the three and a link from each country to its full rules. Four countries post in miles per hour rather than km/h — the UK, the US, Myanmar and Liberia.

What This Tool Does

This interactive map displays the default speed limits for passenger cars in every country. Colour coding makes it easy to spot regional patterns — for example, most of Europe allows 120-130 km/h on motorways, while many Asian and African countries set lower limits. Toggle between urban, rural, and motorway views.

How to Use It

  1. Select the road type: Urban, Rural, or Motorway.
  2. Hover over any country to see its speed limit.
  3. Click a country to open its detailed driving guide with full speed limit breakdowns, penalty information, and equipment requirements.
  4. Use the legend to understand the colour scale.

Data Sources

Speed limits are sourced from official government transport authorities, the International Road Federation, and verified against embassy and consular travel advisories. Limits shown are for standard passenger cars — trucks, buses, and vehicles with trailers typically have lower limits. Always check posted signs, as local limits may differ from the national default.

Frequently Asked Questions

The UAE has some of the highest posted limits at 140 km/h on certain motorways. Parts of the German Autobahn have no enforced speed limit (advisory 130 km/h). Poland allows 140 km/h on some expressways, and Bulgaria permits 140 km/h on motorways.

The United Kingdom, United States, Myanmar and Liberia are the main countries using miles per hour. All other countries use kilometres per hour as their official speed unit.

No. Most countries have lower speed limits for trucks, buses, vehicles towing trailers, and new drivers. The limits shown here are for standard passenger cars. Check individual country pages for vehicle-specific limits.

Many countries have reduced speed limits during rain, fog, snow or nighttime. France lowers its motorway limit from 130 to 110 km/h in rain. Some countries have variable speed limit signs that change in real time based on conditions.

Fines vary enormously. In Norway, exceeding the limit by 20 km/h can cost over EUR 600. A notice can still reach your home address, because authorities use commercial address-tracing services. What does not exist is automatic EU enforcement — Directive 2015/413 covers only eight road-safety offences and emission-zone violations are not among them. Use our Speeding Fine Calculator to estimate penalties by country.
