Emission Zone Checker

Check whether your vehicle can enter low-emission zones (LEZ) and ultra-low-emission zones (ULEZ) in cities across Europe and beyond. Avoid fines by knowing the rules before you drive into restricted areas.

What This Tool Does

Enter your vehicle’s fuel type and Euro emission class, and the checker compares it against all 596 European emission zones at once — telling you instantly which cities you can enter, where you are restricted, and where you are banned, along with the required sticker and the fine for non-compliance.

How to Use It

  1. Select your fuel type (petrol, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, electric, or LPG/CNG).
  2. Select your vehicle’s Euro emission class, found on your vehicle registration document (V5C or Carte Grise).
  3. Click “Check Zones” — the tool checks your vehicle against every European emission zone at once and marks each allowed, restricted, or banned.
  4. For each zone, see the required sticker or registration (German Umweltplakette, French Crit’Air, Spanish DGT label, or LEZ registration) and the fine for entering without it.

Worked Example: where a Euro 4 diesel can (and can’t) go

A Euro 4 diesel car can enter Berlin’s Umweltzone (with a green Umweltplakette) and Madrid, but the decision flips by city and by fuel — an older Euro 3 diesel is banned from Berlin and faces a €100 fine. The result depends on your exact Euro class, your fuel, and each zone’s minimum standard — which is why a single yes/no answer doesn’t work and you have to check your own vehicle.

Here is how the same Euro 4 diesel is treated in three major zones:

ZoneMinimum diesel standardEuro 4 diesel?StickerFine if non-compliant
Berlin UmweltzoneEuro 4✅ AllowedGreen Umweltplakette€100
Paris ZFE (Crit’Air)Euro 2✅ AllowedCrit’Air vignette€68
MadridEuro 4✅ AllowedDGT label€200

Now drop to a Euro 3 diesel and Berlin (min Euro 4) and Madrid (min Euro 4) both ban it — the €100 and €200 fines apply. Select your real fuel and Euro class above to see the verdict for all 596 zones at once.

Cities Covered

The checker covers all 596 emission zones in our database — including London ULEZ (daily charge up to GBP 12.50), Paris ZFE (Crit’Air sticker required), Berlin Umweltzone (green sticker required), Amsterdam’s diesel Milieuzone, the Italian ZTLs, the Spanish ZBEs, and hundreds more across Europe. New zones are added as cities target air quality goals.

Data Sources

Emission zone data is compiled from official city authority websites, the European Urban Access Regulations portal (urbanaccessregulations.eu), and national transport authority publications. Zone boundaries and rules are updated as cities modify their schemes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Low Emission Zone is a defined area in a city where the most polluting vehicles are restricted or banned. Vehicles must meet specific emission standards (Euro classes) to enter. Fines for non-compliance range from EUR 68 to EUR 500+ depending on the country.

Check your vehicle registration document (V5C/Carte Grise) for the Euro emission standard. Most zones require at least Euro 3 for petrol and Euro 4 for diesel vehicles, though many cities now require Euro 5 or 6. Electric and hybrid vehicles are usually exempt.

The Umweltplakette is a coloured sticker (red, yellow, or green) placed on your windscreen indicating your vehicle's emission class. Green stickers (Euro 4+) are required in most German cities with environmental zones. You can buy one online or at TUV/DEKRA stations for about EUR 5-15.

Crit'Air is a colour-coded sticker system used in France to classify vehicles by emission levels. There are 6 categories (0 to 5) plus unclassified. Many French cities require a Crit'Air vignette during pollution peaks or permanently in ZFE zones. Order online at certificat-air.gouv.fr for EUR 3.72.

It depends on the diesel Euro class and the specific city. Newer diesel vehicles (Euro 6, from 2015+) are generally allowed in most zones. Older diesels (Euro 3 and below) are banned in many major European cities. Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, and London have particularly strict rules for diesel vehicles.
