Cross 3,500 kg in the Netherlands and the motorhome stops being a car in the eyes of the law: article 22 of the RVV 1990 caps campers in the commercial-vehicle category at 80 km/h on every road outside built-up areas, the motorway included. That is 20 km/h below what cars are doing beside you in daylight and up to 50 below the night-time stretches. Wild camping is not permitted anywhere, so overnight means a camperplaats, and while the country charges no motorway toll at all, two tunnels still take a fee.

The motorhome column comes straight from article 22 of the RVV 1990, which places campers over 3,500 kg registered as commercial vehicles in the same 80 km/h band as lorries and ordinary buses. It applies on all roads outside built-up areas, so there is no faster motorway rate to look forward to.

For cars the motorway limit is 100 km/h between 06:00 and 19:00, with 120 or 130 km/h posted at night depending on the road; since 2025 three stretches — parts of the A6, A7 and A37, 117 km in total — carry 130 km/h around the clock. None of that changes what a heavy camper may do.

A camper under 3,500 kg is treated as a car and follows the car column.

Wild Camping & Overnight Parking

Prohibited. Overnight stops belong on a campsite or a designated camperplaats. There are over 400 camperplaatsen with good facilities, typically 10-25 EUR a night, and they are well distributed along the coast and the rivers.

Size & Weight Restrictions

Low bridges are common and the standard maximum height on most roads is 4 m. Dyke roads and village centres narrow sharply; check the route before committing a wide vehicle to one.

Gas & LPG Availability

LPG is widely available and most larger stations offer autogas.

Waste Disposal & Service Points

Service points at most camperplaatsen and many petrol stations.

Toll Roads & Vignettes

There are no Dutch motorway tolls and no vignette. Two tunnels are the exceptions: the Kiltunnel charges EUR 2 in cash, or EUR 1.45 with a Telecard for vehicles up to 2.30 m — a height most motorhomes exceed, so expect the cash rate. The Westerscheldetunnel has been free for cars since 30 December 2024.

Service points are standard at camperplaatsen and common at larger petrol stations, so a chemical toilet and grey water rarely need planning around.
