Hungary’s road code, the KRESZ, draws its line at 3,500 kg. Below it a motorhome drives like a car, with 130 km/h on motorways. Above it the vehicle joins the heavy class: 80 km/h on motorways and 70 km/h on every other road outside towns, expressways included. Every motorway user needs a plate-based e-vignette, and an unpaid passage becomes a HUF 27,790 surcharge rather than a fine.

Motorhome Speed Limits in Hungary

Road typeUp to 3,500 kgOver 3,500 kg
Motorway (autópálya)130 km/h80 km/h
Expressway (autóút)110 km/h70 km/h
Other roads outside towns90 km/h70 km/h
Built-up areas50 km/h50 km/h

The mass that counts is the permitted maximum in the registration document, not what the vehicle weighs on the day. Towing a trailer puts the combination into the 80/70/50 class regardless of the motorhome’s own mass.

Toll Roads and the E-Vignette

Motorways and the main expressways are covered by the electronic e-Matrica, sold at ematrica.nemzetiutdij.hu, at petrol stations and at the national toll service. Nothing is stuck to the windscreen; cameras read the plate.

10 daysHUF 6,900

AnnualHUF 61,760

A motorhome that exceeds 3,500 kg or seats more than seven falls into a higher fee category; confirm the category before paying, because a vignette in the wrong class counts as no vignette. County (megye) vignettes are cheaper if you only cross one region.

Unpaid passage. The charge is a surcharge (pótdíj) under decree 45/2020 ITM: HUF 27,790 if settled within 60 days, HUF 95,730 after that.

Wild Camping and Overnight Parking

Plan on campsites. Overnighting outside a site is a matter of local rules and the landowner’s permission, and the thermal-bath campsites attached to spa towns are the reason many motorhomers come to Hungary in the first place. The blood-alcohol limit for drivers is zero.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the permitted maximum mass. Up to 3,500 kg a motorhome drives to car limits: 130 km/h on motorways, 110 on expressways, 90 on other roads outside built-up areas and 50 in towns. Over 3,500 kg the KRESZ puts it with other motor vehicles: 80 km/h on motorways, 70 km/h on every other road outside towns, expressways included, and 50 in towns.

Calculate your exact fine for any speed

Yes, on motorways and the main expressways. The e-vignette is electronic and tied to the plate, sold at ematrica.nemzetiutdij.hu, at petrol stations and at the national toll company. For the D1 category (up to 3,500 kg, up to seven seats) the 2026 prices are HUF 5,550 for one day, HUF 6,900 for ten days, HUF 11,170 for a month and HUF 61,760 for a year. A heavier or larger motorhome falls into a higher category, so check the category before buying.

An unpaid passage is charged as a surcharge rather than a fine: HUF 27,790 if settled within 60 days, HUF 95,730 after that, under decree 45/2020 ITM. County vignettes are cheaper than the national one if you only cross one region.

Check if your licence is valid

Plan on campsites. Overnighting outside a site depends on local rules and the landowner's permission, and Hungary's thermal-bath campsites are the country's distinctive option anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is zero, so the evening glass waits until the vehicle is parked for the night.

112 for any emergency, 107 police, 104 ambulance, 105 fire. A warning triangle, reflective vest and first-aid kit are compulsory; a fire extinguisher and spare bulbs are recommended.
