Two numbers on this page were wrong and both cost money. Croatia’s motorway toll steps up at 1.90 m, not 1.3 m: HAC defines class I as “motor vehicles with two axles, up to 1.90 m high”, and class II as two-axle vehicles “above 1.90 m, with the maximum authorised mass of 3,500 kg” β€” which is where almost every motorhome and high-top van lands. And once the vehicle passes 3.5 tonnes, the Road Traffic Safety Act caps it at 80 km/h on motorways and expressways, not 90.

Wild camping outside registered campsites is prohibited under Croatia’s hospitality legislation and policed along the coast in season. We could not open an official text confirming the EUR 1,500 figure this page used to quote, so no amount is stated here β€” the operative point is that the ban is real and enforced, and that legal alternatives have multiplied.

Motorhome Speed Limits in Croatia

Speed limits for motorhomes often differ from car limits, especially for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes:

Road TypeMotorhome over 3.5 tCar Limit
Settlements50 km/h50 km/h
Other roads outside settlements80 km/h90 km/h
Expressway80 km/h110 km/h
Motorway80 km/h130 km/h

Under 3.5 tonnes a motorhome follows the car column β€” 130 km/h on the A1, in theory. Over 3.5 tonnes, article 55 of the Road Traffic Safety Act puts it with buses and heavy goods vehicles at 80 km/h on motorways and expressways. Road surface quality varies on secondary roads, which matters more in a tall vehicle.

Wild Camping & Overnight Parking

Prohibited outside registered campsites, and actively policed on the coast in July and August. Croatia’s hospitality legislation, not the traffic code, carries the penalty; no figure is quoted here β€” treat it as expensive and assume the fine is the smaller problem next to being moved on at 02:00.

The legal network keeps growing: registered campsites, coastal mini-camps with basic facilities, and transit parking areas. Parking an empty motorhome in an ordinary bay during the day is a different matter and is not what the ban targets.

Size & Weight Restrictions

Coastal roads can be narrow and winding. Large motorhomes (over 7m) should avoid small coastal villages.

Gas & LPG Availability

LPG (autoplin) widely available at INA stations.

Waste Disposal & Service Points

Service points at larger campsites. Petrol station facilities limited.

Toll Roads & Vignettes

Croatia has no vignette: motorway tolls are distance-based and billed by class at the barrier. The dividing line is height over the front axle β€” up to 1.90 m is class I, above 1.90 m (still under 3.5 t) is class II, and class II pays materially more over a long run such as Zagreb to Split. Over 3.5 tonnes you move into class III or IV by axle count. An ENC transponder earns a discount, and the PeljeΕ‘ac Bridge is toll-free.

Frequently Asked Questions

No β€” overnight stays outside registered campsites are prohibited and enforced along the coast in season. The penalty sits in Croatia's hospitality legislation rather than the traffic code, and no euro figure is quoted here, so treat the risk as real whatever the amount.

Under 3.5 tonnes, car limits apply: 50 in settlements, 90 on other roads, 110 on expressways, 130 on motorways. Over 3.5 tonnes, article 55 of the Road Traffic Safety Act caps you at 80 km/h on motorways and expressways.

Calculate your exact fine for any speed

There is no vignette. You take a ticket and pay by distance and class at the exit barrier. A vehicle taller than 1.90 m over the front axle but under 3.5 tonnes is class II and pays the higher rate β€” that is most motorhomes and high-top vans.
