One number on the plate decides how an Austrian trip runs, and it is the technically permissible laden mass. Up to 3.5 tonnes a motorhome is treated as a car: 130 km/h on the motorway, 100 on rural roads and Autostrassen, and the ordinary vignette, which ASFINAG prices at EUR 106.80 for the year and EUR 9.60 for a single day. Cross that line and the limits drop to 80 km/h on the motorway and 70 on rural roads, and the vignette stops applying altogether — a heavy motorhome runs on the GO toll system instead. Overnighting is the third question, and it is answered province by province rather than nationally.
Motorhome Speed Limits in Austria
Speed limits for motorhomes often differ from car limits, especially for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes:

A motorhome up to 3.5 t is a Kraftwagen bis 3.500 kg and takes car limits; above that mass it takes the same limits as a lorry, which is where drivers of heavier coachbuilts come unstuck. Towing changes it again: with a trailer, the combination drops to 100 km/h on the motorway, and to 80 km/h if the trailer is heavy enough to need a BE licence.
Wild Camping & Overnight Parking
There is no single national rule to quote. Camping outside authorised sites is regulated by each Land through its own camping and nature-protection legislation, and the wording differs — some provinces prohibit camping rather than parking, which is why the advice you read varies so much. The practical position is the same everywhere: set up a table, wind out an awning or put down steadies and you are camping, and in most of Austria that is an offence outside a site.
Sleeping in a legally parked vehicle to break a journey is treated differently from camping in most provinces, but it is not a licence to stay put for a few days in an alpine car park. Stellplätze are widespread and inexpensive compared with the risk.
Size & Weight Restrictions
Many alpine passes have weight (7.5t) and length (10m) limits. Check before planning mountain routes.

Service points at Stellplatz and campsites. ENI stations sometimes offer motorhome services.
Toll Roads & Vignettes
Under 3.5 t, the standard vignette covers the network. ASFINAG’s 2026 tariff is EUR 106.80 for the year, EUR 32.00 for two months, EUR 12.80 for ten days and EUR 9.60 for a day, and the digital version is the same price as the sticker. Over 3.5 t there is no vignette to buy: the vehicle is tolled by distance through the GO system and needs a GO-Box before it joins the motorway.
Either way, the special tolls are separate. The Brenner, Tauern, Arlberg tunnel, Grossglockner and Felbertauern are charged on top of the vignette or the GO account.
