Where to Park Outside Siena's ZTL (2026) — the Escalator Car Parks

Siena is stacked across three steep ridges, which changes how you should think about parking. Anywhere else, “park outside the ZTL” is just about dodging the camera. Here it’s also about not dragging a suitcase up a medieval hill in July. The town solved this years ago with something most visitors don’t realise until they arrive: several of the car parks have escalators built into the hillside that carry you up into the centre.

Get the lot right and you avoid the fine and the climb.

The escalator lots — worth the couple of euros

Two names to remember: San Francesco, on Via Baldassarre Peruzzi to the north-east, and Santa Caterina, down by Fontebranda on the west side. Both, along with the central Il Campo and Duomo garages, are wired with escalators or moving walkways that lift you the steep last stretch into the old town. After a long drive, that’s not a luxury — it’s the difference between arriving fresh and arriving soaked.

They’re the priciest option at roughly €2 an hour, capped at €35 for the day, but the cap means a full day out isn’t punishing, and you land right at the top with no hill to fight.

The overnight trick: get your plate in the system

Staying the night? There’s a genuine saving most people miss. The daily rate drops to a hotel rate of about €25 — but only if your accommodation enters your number plate into the Sigerico parking system when you check in. It won’t happen automatically. Ask at reception, give them the plate, and let them register it; otherwise you pay the full €35.

The budget play: Parcheggio Stadio

Watching costs and happy to walk? Parcheggio Stadio, next to the football ground, runs about €1.50 an hour and sits a 15-to-20-minute walk north-east of the centre, with a free shuttle in peak season. No escalator, and a bit of a climb at the end, but noticeably cheaper for a short visit.

The camera doesn’t care that you’re lost

Siena’s gates funnel confusingly, and the single most common way visitors get fined is drifting past a ZTL sign while hunting for a hotel. Don’t. Park in one of the lots below the centre first, walk or ride the escalator in, and deal with luggage on foot or via a permit your hotel arranges in advance.
