Where to Park Outside Pienza's ZTL (2026) — the Bronze Horse Lot

Pienza is small enough that the mistake happens fast: you follow the road up the hill, the town wall appears, there’s a gap in it that looks like the way in — and that gap is the mouth of the ZTL. Drive through it and a camera has already read your plate. The whole centre inside the walls is a limited-traffic zone, so the honest answer to “where do I park in Pienza” is always outside, and then you walk the last couple of minutes on foot.

The good news is that walk is genuinely short, and the town is built for it.

The lot to aim for: below the walls, by the bronze horse

Coming up on the SP146 from Montepulciano or San Quirico, don’t turn in at the first gate. Keep to the road that curves around the outside of the walls and you’ll come to the main parking area sitting just below the old town — the landmark everyone uses to describe it is the bronze horse statue standing at the edge of the lot. Locally this is the P1 area, and because it’s the biggest, it’s your best bet: plenty of room first thing in the morning, filling up by late morning when the tour cars arrive.

From there it’s a two-to-five-minute uphill walk through the gate and you’re on Corso il Rossellino, the main street, within a minute of Piazza Pio II. You never touch the ZTL.

Reading the lines before you leave the car

Italian kerb paint is the whole game here, and Pienza is no exception:

• White lines — free. Grab one if you see it, but they go early.
• Blue lines — paid. Roughly €1.50 an hour, or about €10 for the full day if you’re staying to eat and wander. There’s usually a meter; pay and put the ticket on the dash.
• Yellow lines — don’t. These are for residents’ permits and disabled badges only.

Sundays are generally free across the town lots — though that’s also when many shops shut by lunchtime, so it cuts both ways.

If you’re sleeping inside the walls

Booked a hotel or B&B in the centre and wondering how the luggage gets there? You don’t just drive in and hope. The normal drill is to park outside first, walk in to your accommodation, and have them arrange a short ZTL permit — often good for about an hour — that lets you drive in once to drop bags and then bring the car back out to a lot. Sort it with the property in advance; don’t improvise it at the gate, because the camera doesn’t know your plans.

The one-line version

Loop around the walls, park by the bronze horse, read the line colour, walk in. That’s the entire trick to Pienza, and it’s the difference between a €5 afternoon and a fine that turns up in your inbox six weeks later.
