Lucca ZTL 2026: Park Outside the Walls from EUR 0.50/Hour

Lucca gives you no window at all: the whole walled centre is a limited-traffic zone 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so the Sunday and late-night let-offs that other Tuscan towns allow simply do not exist here. Leave the car outside the walls instead — Parcheggio Mazzini is underground, open around the clock and the cheapest secure option at roughly EUR 0.50 an hour with a daily cap near EUR 6, five minutes on foot from Porta Santa Maria. Arriving from the south, Carducci sits just outside Porta Sant’Anna and is open all hours too, while the free spaces around Borgo Giannotti are a 15-minute walk out and gone before 9am in summer. Read the paint wherever you stop: blue lines are the paid spaces, yellow are residents’ permits, and the gate cameras turn a wrong turn into a EUR 83-335 fine.

So the rule in Lucca is simple and absolute: leave the car outside the walls. The upside is that “outside the walls” is a ring of proper car parks, and the walk in is flat and short.

The value pick: Mazzini, underground, north-east

If you want the least-stress option, aim for Parcheggio Mazzini on the north-east side. It’s underground, open around the clock, video-surveilled, and the cheapest of the secure lots — about €0.50 an hour by day and a daily cap near €6, which is unusually kind for a Tuscan tourist town. From there it’s roughly a five-minute walk to Porta Santa Maria and straight into the centre. This is the one I’d send a first-time visitor to.

The other side of town: Carducci

Arriving from the south or west, Parcheggio Carducci sits just outside the walls near Porta Sant’Anna and runs about €1.50 an hour, open 24 hours. It’s handy if your accommodation is in the southern half of the centre, and it saves circling the whole ring to reach Mazzini.

Free, if you’re an early riser

There are free spaces around Borgo Giannotti, about a 15-minute walk north of the walls — but this is no secret, and in summer they’re gone well before 9am. Treat it as a bonus if you’re arriving early, not a plan you can rely on at midday.

Wherever you stop, check the paint: blue lines are the paid spaces you want, and yellow lines are residents-only — parking on yellow is its own separate ticket, quite apart from the ZTL.

Don’t try to “just drop the bags”

The classic trap is nosing through a gate to unload luggage at a hotel. The camera reads your plate the moment you cross, regardless of intent. If you’re staying inside the walls, ask the property how they handle it — many can register your plate for a permitted drop-off — and sort it before you drive, never at the arch.

Once the car’s parked, Lucca rewards you: you can walk the entire top of the walls, a 4km green loop, without ever meeting a car.
