Hungary’s motorway pass is electronic and tied to your number plate, which makes buying it easy and buying the wrong one just as easy. The cheaper county (vármegyei) vignette covers the tolled roads of a single county, so a run from Budapest to Lake Balaton, or a transit towards Croatia or Romania, leaves you uncovered as soon as the route leaves that county. Unless the whole trip stays in one county, buy a national pass from the official system. Checks are made by camera against your plate, and the 2026 surcharge for an uncovered car starts at HUF 27,790 and rises to HUF 95,730 if it is not paid within 60 days.
National vs county: get this right
The e-matrica comes as a national vignette, valid on every tolled road, or an annual county vignette valid on one county’s tolled roads only. For a typical trip through the country, a single county pass won’t cover your route, and each stretch outside it is treated as driving with no vignette. Unless your whole drive stays in one county, buy a national vignette.
It’s electronic, so enter your plate carefully
There is nothing to display: your number plate and country of registration are recorded, so a typo when buying leaves you uncovered despite having paid. Buy from the official system (online, app or a sales point) before you join a tolled road.

The national toll service heads this table “valid from 1 January 2026” and had published no 2027 table by 3 October 2026. Annual passes, national or county, run from purchase until midnight on 31 January of the following year, so a 2026 annual covers you until 31 January 2027. A 10-day pass covers the start day plus nine more, and a monthly pass runs to the same date in the next month.
The arithmetic matters. A single day costs almost as much as ten, so the day pass only makes sense for one short motorway hop. The monthly pass costs HUF 4,270 more than the 10-day one, worth it if your trip might run past ten days or you come back through Hungary on the return leg. The national annual pays off only for regular crossings. The county pass is the cheapest legal option for someone whose driving stays in one region; if you cannot name the county every kilometre of your route sits in, it is not for you.
The surcharge
Driving without valid cover triggers a surcharge of HUF 27,790 if paid within 60 days and HUF 95,730 after that (decree 45/2020 ITM). Holding a pass in too low a vehicle category brings a smaller difference surcharge: HUF 15,530, or HUF 49,190 after 60 days.
