Petrol across Europe costs between $0.91 a litre in Belarus and $2.91 in Denmark, so the same tank costs 3.2 times as much at the dear end. The average across the 37 countries with an official figure is $2.09 for petrol and $2.26 for diesel, and diesel is currently the dearer fuel in 33 of them, so the old rule that diesel saves money at the pump does not hold right now.

About these figures. EU prices come from the European Commission’s Weekly Oil Bulletin dated 19 October 2026 (prices including taxes), converted to US dollars at that week’s ECB reference rate; other countries use their own official sources, each dated in the table. Pump prices move every week, so use them to compare countries, not to budget a tank to the cent. The names on the pumps change across borders too, while the E10 and B7 labels stay the same; fuel types explained decodes them.

No official price we could verify for Iceland, Kosovo, Serbia, Turkey or Ukraine, so they are left out rather than estimated.

Why Prices Vary So Much

Most of the gap between two European pumps is tax rather than oil. Excise duty and VAT make up a large share of the retail price, and each government sets its own rates, which is why neighbouring countries buying from the same refineries can sit far apart in the table above. Exchange rates add a second layer for the non-euro countries, and a weekly pass-through of crude and wholesale prices moves everything together.
