European Breakdown Cover 2026: Single Trip, Annual or Motorhome

European breakdown cover is separate from motor insurance: single-trip suits one holiday, annual two or more. Motorhomes must fit 3.5 t and 7 m limits.

Quick Answer

Single-trip cover for one drive abroad a year, annual for two or more. Motor insurance does not include it. Check whether repairs are paid, every country on the route is named and a motorhome fits the size limits.

Buy single-trip European breakdown cover if this is your only drive abroad this year, and an annual policy if you will make two or more trips — the threshold the AA itself gives for its annual product. Neither comes with ordinary motor insurance, which only guarantees third-party liability across the EU. Before paying, check three things the sales page tends to bury: whether repair bills are covered or only the call-out, whether every country on your route sits inside the policy’s zone, and, for a motorhome or a towed caravan, the weight and size limits.

What to do at the roadside once something has gone wrong, including French and Italian motorway tariffs, is in our breakdown-abroad checklist. This page is about choosing the policy.

Single trip or annual: count your crossings

A single-trip policy covers fixed dates. If the holiday overruns because the car is in a garage, ask the provider in writing whether the cover extends with it. An annual policy pays off once you travel more than once: the AA’s version allows unlimited trips of up to 364 days each and up to three claims a year. Other providers set their own per-trip maximum, so set that number against your longest planned trip, not your average one.

Two smaller points decide value: whether the policy follows a named vehicle or any car you drive, and how many claims it allows, which matters more for an older car than for a new one.

Breakdown cover from the UK to Europe: add-on or stand-alone

UK drivers buy European cover in one of two ways: as an extension to a UK breakdown membership, or as a stand-alone policy from a provider that does not require membership. The AA sells it both ways and says membership is not needed. Whichever route you take, read four clauses:

  1. Repatriation trigger — how many days the repair may take, or what repair cost against the car’s value, before the car is shipped home.
  2. Alternative travel — the cash cap for trains, flights or a hire car to finish the trip.
  3. Accommodation — the per-night or per-claim cap while the car waits for parts.
  4. Territory — a named list of countries, not “Europe”.

The car itself must be legal to leave the UK. GOV.UK says you need a UK sticker where the number plate does not show the UK identifier, and in Spain, Cyprus and Malta regardless; you must carry your licence and the V5C log book, or a VE103 for a hired or leased car. It also confirms that every UK motor policy gives the minimum third-party cover to drive in the EU. That is liability for damage you cause, not help for your own car. The insurance side, including the countries that still check a Green Card, is covered in our travel insurance hub.

AA breakdown cover in Europe: what the AA’s own page lists

Because “AA breakdown cover Europe” is one of the most searched versions of this question, here is what theaa.com stated on 30 October 2026. Prices move daily, so none are quoted.

  • Zones. Zone 1 is Andorra, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland. Zone 2 adds Austria, Gibraltar, Italy, Liechtenstein, Portugal, San Marino, Spain (not Ceuta or Melilla), Switzerland and the Vatican. Zone 3 is the widest, reaching Albania, Croatia, Greece, Norway, Sweden and European Turkey among others — 40 countries in all.
  • Limited help. In Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Ukraine you pay for repairs and claim the money back at home.
  • Included. Attendance by a local agent, recovery to a garage or back to the UK, alternative travel up to GBP 1,500, emergency hotel costs up to GBP 500, a hire car, and legal costs up to GBP 50,000.
  • Not included unless added. Repair bills, which need the optional Parts and Labour Cover (up to GBP 500).
  • Conditions on the car. A current MOT where one is required, valid overseas insurance, and private use only. The page says vehicles of any age are accepted.

A Croatian or Montenegrin road trip therefore needs the widest zone, and a route through Bosnia-Herzegovina works on reimbursement rather than direct payment.

Motorhome breakdown cover in Europe: the size limits decide it

For a motorhome, size is the first test a policy applies. The AA’s European cover accepts campervans, motor caravans, caravans and trailers up to 3.5 tonnes gross weight, 7 m long, 2.3 m wide and 3 m high. Measure the van with any bike rack or roof box fitted. A vehicle over any one of those figures needs a specialist motorhome policy and a heavy van needs a different class of recovery truck.

Weight also changes the road rules you plan around. In France a motorhome over 3.5 tonnes is held to 110 km/h on the autoroute (France motorhome guide). Norway caps vehicles over 3,500 kg at 80 km/h where a higher limit is posted, but exempts M1 motorhomes up to 7,500 kg without a trailer (Norway motorhome guide). Towing a caravan with a car is a separate condition in many policies; check that the towed unit is recovered too.

When the policy does not choose the tow truck

On French motorways only an approved recovery firm may intervene, at tariffs fixed each year by ministerial order, and you call it through the operator, by the roadside emergency phone or by calling. Italy’s Autostrade network works through operators it has authorised. Your breakdown provider cannot override either system, so ask before buying whether it pays the approved firm directly or reimburses you, and keep the itemised invoice either way. Details and the current French tariff table are on the France driving page and in the breakdown checklist.

Kit and winter rules on the main breakdown routes

A patrol arrives faster if you have signalled the car properly, and a missing vest or triangle is a fine in its own right. The table below is generated from TyreMap’s country data and lists only mandatory items. In Spain the V-16 beacon (*) applies to Spanish-registered cars, hire cars included; foreign-registered cars may still use triangles.

The cross-border checklist shows what changes as you pass each frontier, the motorway rules tool covers lane and speed rules, and the emergency numbers tool lists every national line. For an older car on a winter route through Austria, Slovenia or Croatia, fit legal winter tyres before you rely on any policy: a breakdown caused by unsuitable equipment is still your problem at the roadside.

Hire cars are a different contract

If the car is rented, your own European breakdown policy rarely applies: call the rental company’s assistance line on the agreement or key tag first, because the contract decides who recovers its car. Our car rental in Europe guide covers what to check at the desk, including the excess you carry if something does go wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not automatically. European cover is sold as its own product: the AA, for example, sells European Breakdown Cover separately and says AA membership is not needed to buy it. Read your membership terms for a European section before you assume you are covered beyond the UK.

Only if you add its optional Parts and Labour Cover, which the AA lists at up to GBP 500 for garage and repair bills. The base policy pays for a local agent to attend, recovery to a garage or back to the UK, alternative travel up to GBP 1,500 and emergency hotel costs up to GBP 500.

Only if it is inside the size limits. The AA's European cover accepts campervans and motor caravans up to 3.5 tonnes gross weight, 7 m long, 2.3 m wide and 3 m high. A heavier or longer motorhome needs a specialist policy, so measure it, including any bike rack, before you buy.

No. On French motorways only a recovery firm approved by the motorway operator may intervene, at prices fixed each year by ministerial order. You alert the operator by the roadside emergency phone or by calling, then claim the bill back from your policy if it does not pay the approved firm directly.

It depends on the provider. The AA's annual policy allows unlimited trips of up to 364 days each and up to three claims a year. Other providers set their own maximum trip length and claim count, so compare those numbers with your longest planned journey.
