To drive in a Spanish ZBE (Zona de Bajas Emisiones) your car needs the right DGT environmental label — 0, ECO, C or B — and the oldest, unlabelled cars are shut out entirely. The sticker costs about €5, and driving in without a valid one is typically a €200 fine. Foreign-registered cars are not exempt.

How the Spanish ZBE system works

Under national law, every Spanish town above 50,000 people must set up a ZBE, so the list is growing quickly. Access is controlled by the DGT distintivo ambiental: a 0 label (electric/plug-in) goes everywhere, ECO and C cover most petrol and newer diesels, B is the oldest still allowed, and cars with no label are generally banned from the centre. Madrid (Madrid 360) and Barcelona set the tightest thresholds.

Buy the label from Correos post offices or the official DGT channels — it is tied to your plate, so get it before you travel.

Before you drive

  • Check which DGT label your car qualifies for from its Euro class and registration date.
  • Buy the ~€5 sticker in advance; foreign cars need to register with some city systems too.
  • Thresholds rise over time and differ between Madrid, Barcelona and smaller ZBEs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Spain's DGT environmental sticker (distintivo ambiental) grades your car — 0, ECO, C or B — by emissions. You need the right one to enter a ZBE (Zona de Bajas Emisiones). It costs about €5 from Correos post offices or online. Foreign cars are also subject to the rules.

Typically €200, issued by camera. The minimum label differs by city and tightens over time — Madrid and Barcelona are the strictest, generally requiring at least a B label (roughly Euro 4 diesel / Euro 3 petrol).

Madrid and Barcelona lead, with Valencia, Seville, Bilbao, Zaragoza and a fast-growing list of towns following under national law. The full in-force list is in the table below.
