Austria’s IG-L emission zones mostly restrict trucks and buses, not cars — a key difference from Germany or France. The zones come from the air-quality law and target heavy commercial traffic by Euro standard; a tourist in a normal car is usually unaffected, though vans, motorhomes and Alpine routes can carry their own rules.

How the Austrian IG-L system works

Unlike sticker-based schemes, Austria’s IG-L zones are air-quality driving restrictions that mainly bite on goods vehicles and buses below a set Euro class. Graz and parts of Styria are the best-known city cases; separately, sector-based and speed restrictions apply on some Alpine motorways to cut emissions. For a passenger car the practical takeaway is usually “no restriction,” but a heavier vehicle can face fines up to about EUR 2,180.

Before you drive

  • In a normal car, you are usually unaffected — but confirm for the exact zone.
  • Driving a van, motorhome or towing? Check the goods-vehicle Euro requirement.
  • Watch for separate Alpine speed/sector restrictions, which are about emissions too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mostly no. Austria's IG-L zones (based on the air-quality law, Immissionsschutzgesetz-Luft) primarily restrict heavy goods vehicles and buses by Euro standard. Passenger cars are usually not banned, though local sector-based driving bans and Alpine routes can carry separate rules — always check the specific zone.

Check emission zone requirements

Graz and parts of Styria, plus stretches of Alpine motorway and the Tyrol/Inntal corridor, are the best known. The rules are aimed at commercial traffic. The full in-force list is in the table below.

Penalties for goods and commercial vehicles can be steep — up to around EUR 2,180 for the most serious breaches. Because the restrictions mostly target lorries and buses, most tourists in a car are unaffected, but confirm before driving a van or motorhome.
