Luxembourg solves the visitor’s charging problem the plain way. Its public Chargy network, with SuperChargy as the fast tier, lets a driver without any card or contract plug in and pay by credit card at the fixed price shown on the station screen, or through a QR code. The EU Alternative Fuels Observatory counts 11.79% of the light-duty fleet as alternative-fuelled in 2025.

Connector Types

  • CCS2 for DC fast charging
  • Type 2 for AC charging

Chargy AC stations are untethered; SuperChargy sites have their own cables.

Charging Networks

  • Chargy and SuperChargy (national public network)
  • Ionity
  • Shell Recharge
  • Tesla Supercharger

Chargy’s certified charging service providers sell contracts that work across the whole network, which is the cheaper route if you are in the country for more than a few days. For a weekend, the credit-card option at the station is enough.

Subsidies

The state Klimabonus programme, administered through Klima-Agence, lists subsidies for vehicles and charging stations. Amounts change by programme year and the conditions are tied to registering the car in Luxembourg, so a visitor is not concerned; a resident should read the current year’s terms before signing an order.

A Small Country, Short Charging Stops

  • The Grand Duchy is compact enough that one full charge covers almost any domestic day; the fast SuperChargy and Ionity sites matter mainly for onward trips into France, Germany or Belgium
  • Fuel and electricity are both priced below the neighbouring countries, so the motorway service areas near the three borders are busier than the domestic distances alone would suggest
  • Keep a Type 2 cable in the boot for the untethered Chargy AC posts; SuperChargy’s fast bays bring their own
  • Pre-condition the cabin and battery while still plugged in before setting off on a cold morning
