Iceland EV Driving 2026: 65% Share Around the Ring Road

Iceland’s EV market share has climbed to 65%, among the highest anywhere, and its 1,000+ charging points now follow Route 1 around the entire island. ON and Ísorka run the main networks, pricing power at ISK 40–70, about €0.25–0.45 per kWh. CHAdeMO is still supported alongside CCS2 and Type 2.

Most new public chargers use CCS2 for DC fast charging and Type 2 for AC charging. Always carry an adapter cable as a backup.

Range Tips

Route 1 ring road (1,322km) has chargers at regular intervals. Extreme weather and highland roads (F-roads) are EV-challenging. Wind and cold reduce range. Reykjavik area very well served.

Practical Tips for EV Drivers

• Plan your route around fast chargers, especially for long-distance trips. Apps like ABRP (A Better Route Planner) are invaluable.
• Charge to 80% rather than 100% for faster charging sessions. The last 20% takes disproportionately longer.
• Pre-condition your cabin and battery while still plugged in to maximise range in cold weather.
• Keep your charging cards and apps ready. Not all chargers accept credit cards — RFID or app payment may be required.
• Check if your accommodation offers overnight charging. Many hotels and Airbnbs now provide destination chargers.
