What the York zone is
Seven English cities charge drivers under a Clean Air Zone: Bath, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Portsmouth, Sheffield and Tyneside. Of those, only Birmingham and Bristol charge cars at all. York is in neither group. Its scheme is an agreement covering the local bus fleet, introduced in January 2020 and fully operational after a twelve-month sunset period, in January 2021.
Where the boundary runs
The zone is the part of York inside the A1036 inner ring road. The council lists the streets it contains, among them Micklegate, Coppergate, Piccadilly, Walmgate, Gillygate, Station Road and Tower Street. If you are heading for the Minster or the Shambles you are inside it — and, in a car, unaffected by it.
What buses have to meet
Restrictions apply to local bus services making five or more entries into the zone per day; those buses must meet Euro VI as a minimum or run fully electric. Services entering fewer than five times a day fall outside the requirement, under an advisory standard instead.
What does cost you in York
Parking. City-centre spaces are limited and metered, and York’s Park & Ride sites on the approach roads are usually both cheaper and faster than driving to the centre. None of that has anything to do with emissions or your vehicle’s Euro class.
