The city’s own page sets the calendar: “hasta 2029: podrán circular todos los vehículos independientemente de su etiqueta”, then label A is shut out from 2029 to the end of 2033, labels A and B from 1 January 2034, and from 1 January 2039 only Cero and ECO (aytosalamanca.es). Two zones, two very different things
Salamanca has Zona 1, the Zona Peatonal, covering the monumental core — Puerta de Zamora, avenida de Mirat, plaza de España, Gran Vía, calle San Pablo, paseo del Rector Esperabé, Vaguada de la Palma, calle Fonseca, paseo de Carmelitas, plaza de los Bandos and the streets between them. And it has an outer zone.
The pedestrian zone is a permission problem: cameras read your plate against a list. The outer zone is a calendar problem, and its calendar has not started. Confusing the two is how visitors end up believing an old car is barred from Salamanca. It is not.
How to get into the pedestrian zone
Anyone with a genuine reason — a hotel inside it, a medical appointment, a car park, a school run, picking up someone with reduced mobility — registers their personal details and the plate on the city’s digital platform and receives an access authorisation. The city is explicit that this applies “indistintamente del medio de transporte que utilice” and regardless of the vehicle’s label.
Residents of the zone, people with a garage space inside it, and anyone paying their vehicle tax in Salamanca are entered in the system automatically and need do nothing.
What a violation costs
Salamanca publishes no amount. Its pages describe the camera control and the adaptation period, and state that penalties would not begin before 2025, but name no figure. Unauthorised entry to a restricted zone is treated as a grave infraction under Spain’s traffic act, carrying €200 halved for prompt payment — that is the national default, and it is the honest way to quote it rather than dressing it up as a Salamanca tariff.
Planning your visit
Park outside the monumental core. The underground car parks on the ring are minutes from Plaza Mayor on foot, and the pedestrian core is small enough that driving into it saves nothing even when you are allowed to.
If you are staying inside, ask the hotel to handle the platform registration before you arrive, and take the confirmation with you.
