Pontevedra is famous for something few cities can claim: it pedestrianised its entire centre back in 1999, banishing through-traffic decades before the rest of Spain caught on. Because that long-standing traffic plan already cut car use so sharply, the city argued it had no need for a formal Low Emission Zone — and it secured a legal exception rather than setting one up. So despite what you may read elsewhere, there is no ZBE in force in Pontevedra.
What that means in practice: all vehicles can enter the wider city on the same terms, there is no DGT environmental label check tied to a low emission zone, no restricted hours, and no ZBE fine. The old pedestrian core is still closed to through-traffic as it has been for years, but that is the historic town-centre traffic plan, not an emission-based zone. If a national rule ever changes and Pontevedra does enact a ZBE, we will update this page.
