Niort Has No ZFE in 2026: Crit'Air Buys You Nothing
Zone à Faibles Emissions · France · Announced but never introduced
Source: official source · Verified: 2026-09-19
Niort has no low-emission zone. The French government's ZFE register lists 25 zones in force and Niort is absent, so no Crit'Air vignette is required and no ZFE fine can be issued there.
Didn’t France abolish its low-emission zones?
No — the repeal never took effect. Parliament did vote in April 2026 to abolish France’s ZFEs, which is why so many guides and news reports say they are gone. The Conseil constitutionnel struck that article down on 21 May 2026 (décision n° 2026-903 DC), so the ZFE provisions of the code général des collectivités territoriales (articles L. 2213-4-1 and L. 2213-4-2) stayed on the books.
One caveat most coverage misses: the article was annulled on procedure, not on its merits — the Council held it was a “cavalier législatif”, an amendment with no link to the bill it was attached to (Constitution, art. 45). Parliament can pass the same repeal again in a properly related bill, so this is settled for now rather than settled for good. Read the decision.

There is no ZFE in Niort. The government register at mieuxrespirerenville.gouv.fr names every French low-emission zone in force — 25 of them — and Niort appears nowhere on that list. Nothing on your windscreen changes whether you may drive into the town.

Why Niort keeps appearing on ZFE lists
Under French law an agglomeration only has to create a ZFE if it passes 150,000 inhabitants and breaches air-quality limits. Niort Agglo sits below that threshold; its obligation went no further than an opportunity study inside its climate-air-energy plan. Several commercial map sites copied that study into their databases as though a zone had opened, and the error spread.
The one restriction Deux-Sèvres does operate is a ZPAd — a temporary departmental restricted-circulation order that a prefect can activate during a pollution episode. It is not permanent, it is not signed as a ZFE, and it applies across the département rather than at a city boundary.
What to do before you drive to Niort
- Do not buy a Crit’Air vignette for Niort alone. Buy one only if your route also takes you through Bordeaux, Nantes, Rennes, Lyon, Paris or another of the 25 listed zones.
- Check the register, not an aggregator. The list on mieuxrespirerenville.gouv.fr is the one the Ministry maintains, and it is the reference a French police officer works from.
- Watch for temporary signs. During a smog alert, variable-message panels on approach roads will say so; those orders normally cap speeds rather than ban Crit’Air classes.
Recent changes to this page
- Corrected against the national ZFE register at mieuxrespirerenville.gouv.fr, which lists the 25 zones in force and does not include Niort. This page previously described a Crit'Air rule, weekday hours and a EUR 68 fine for a zone that has never existed here.
- Title, description and introduction rewritten from this page's own data (no shared template wording).
- An earlier check recorded a EUR 68 fine and a Crit'Air requirement for Niort. That was wrong, as the 19 September 2026 entry above explains.
