Messina’s ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato) has been active since 2019 and is one of the most-fined zones in Sicily because of the Villa San Giovanni ferry connection. Most drivers cross the Strait of Messina, disembark at Rada San Francesco, and enter the restricted zone within 3 minutes — long before they realise it exists.

The Ferry-Driver Trap
The Scylla is the ferry, the Charybdis is the ZTL. Drivers off the 6:00 Caronte & Tourist ferry from Villa San Giovanni hit Via Garibaldi within minutes and are logged by cameras before they find their first espresso.
Avoid it by: parking at the port garage (Parcheggio Cortina del Porto) or at the Villaggio Annunziata P+R and taking the tram into the centre. Both are outside the ZTL.
If Your Hotel Is Inside the Zone
