Quick Answer

The Sassi gates open the day at 10:00 and close it at 20:30 from 16 September, or at midnight between 1 July and 15 September. Entry is by permit, not Euro class.

Locally the zone is called Zona a Traffico Limitato Matera (Italy) — that is the wording on the boundary signs, on the official portal and on any penalty notice, so it is the phrase to search for once you are there.

Matera’s restriction has a clock, and it is not the one most listings print. Ordinanza Dirigenziale 147/2025 switches the Sassi gates on at 10:00 every day and off at midnight between 1 July and 15 September, or at 20:30 between 16 September and 30 June. Entry depends on holding a permit, never on your car’s Euro rating — a spotless modern car is turned away just as readily as an old diesel. The camera-issued penalty runs from EUR 83 to EUR 332, and hotel guests can usually be registered at check-in.

Matera ZTL — Zona a Traffico Limitato

The city runs three restricted areas — Rione Sassi, Piave and Cesarea — each under its own ordinance. The one visitors meet is the Sassi, and its timetable comes from Ordinanza Dirigenziale 147/2025, which sets the varchi at via D’Addozio and via Buozzi to “dalle ore 10.00 alle ore 24:00” in the summer period of 1 July to 15 September and “dalle ore 10.00 alle ore 20:30” from 16 September to 30 June. The stated reason is to line the gates up with urban bus hours.

Who Can Enter?

Entry is by permit or residency, not Euro class. Residents with parking, authorised businesses, accommodation providers and permit-holders may enter; everyone else is fined regardless of how clean the vehicle is.

The Permit

A standard authorisation costs EUR 15 by postal payment, with the reference “autorizzazioni z.t.l. d.lgs. 285/92”, plus a EUR 16 marca da bollo produced when you collect it. Pass conversions, ONLUS organisations and disabled badge holders are exempt from the fee. The ZTL office answers on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

Fines

An unauthorised entry is penalised under art. 7 of the Codice della Strada: EUR 83 at the minimum, up to EUR 332. Notices reach foreign-registered vehicles, and rental companies pass them on with an administration fee.

Tips for Visitors

  • Arriving before 10:00 means the gates are still open — but you cannot stay parked inside without a permit
  • Ask your accommodation to register the plate before you drive down into the Sassi, not after
  • Check which of the three areas your address falls in; the ordinances differ

  • Read the source ordinance instead of the summary. Ordinanza Dirigenziale 147/2025 of the Comune di Matera sets the Sassi gates at via D'Addozio and via Buozzi to 10:00-24:00 from 1 July to 15 September and 10:00-20:30 from 16 September to 30 June — not the "daily 09:00-20:00" this page printed. Also repaired a quick answer and an FAQ that had been cut off mid-word, named the three restricted areas, added the EUR 15 permit plus EUR 16 stamp duty, and set the penalty band to the EUR 83-332 of art. 7.
  • Title, description and introduction rewritten from this page's own data (no shared template wording).
  • Repaired a title and description that a generator had cut off mid-word, leaving an unclosed bracket in the live SERP title.
  • Re-verified fine (EUR 83-160) and requirements against Italy authority portal.
  • Confirmed ZTL permit required remains mandatory; 2026 ruleset unchanged.
  • Updated enforcement procedure notes after seasonal review cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Matera's restricted centre is a permit and residency ZTL, not a Euro-class low-emission zone. Your emission rating decides nothing here — a two-year-old hybrid without a permit is fined exactly like a twenty-year-old diesel.

From 1 July to 15 September, 10:00 to midnight. From 16 September to 30 June, 10:00 to 20:30. Those are the hours ordinanza 147/2025 sets for the varchi at via D'Addozio and via Buozzi.
