Didn’t France abolish its low-emission zones?
No — the repeal never took effect. Parliament did vote in April 2026 to abolish France’s ZFEs, which is why so many guides and news reports say they are gone. The Conseil constitutionnel struck that article down on 21 May 2026 (décision n° 2026-903 DC), so the ZFE provisions of the code général des collectivités territoriales (articles L. 2213-4-1 and L. 2213-4-2) stayed on the books.
The zone in Lyon is therefore still in force and you still need a Crit'Air vignette on the windscreen. Turning up without one because you read that ZFEs were scrapped is the expensive version of this mistake — the penalty is EUR 68 (cars, motorcycles, light commercial), EUR 135 (HGV, buses, coaches).
One caveat most coverage misses: the article was annulled on procedure, not on its merits — the Council held it was a “cavalier législatif”, an amendment with no link to the bill it was attached to (Constitution, art. 45). Parliament can pass the same repeal again in a properly related bill, so this is settled for now rather than settled for good. Read the decision.

The restricted area
The Métropole de Lyon draws the perimeter around Lyon and Caluire-et-Cuire plus the parts of Villeurbanne, Bron and Vénissieux that sit inside the Boulevard Laurent Bonnevay, and since 1 January 2024 the M6 and M7 structural routes and the ring itself are inside it too. There is no off-peak let-off: the ban applies continuously.
If your car is Crit’Air 3
Three routes exist rather than one. Petit rouleur allows up to 52 days a year inside the perimeter. A shift-work derogation, open since 1 January 2025, covers drivers working between 21:00 and 06:00 on more than 52 days a year. And since 1 September 2025 a low-income workers’ derogation runs every day with no hourly limit and no annual renewal through to 31 December 2027.
Getting the right sticker
The Crit’Air sticker costs EUR 5.11 from certificat-air.gouv.fr. That’s the only official source. You can’t buy it at the border, at a gas station, or from the guy on the street.
Delivery to a non-French address takes 2-3 weeks. Start early. French rental cars usually come with one.
Where tourists go wrong
Trying to buy the Crit’Air sticker at the border. It doesn’t exist at border shops, gas stations, or rest stops. Online only. Three weeks delivery. No exceptions.
Ignoring it because you didn’t see a barrier. Most modern emission zones use cameras, not gates. No barrier doesn’t mean no enforcement.
Assuming your existing sticker from another EU country works. Germany’s Plakette doesn’t work in France. Belgium’s LEZ registration doesn’t work in France. Each country has its own system.
Rental car assumption. People assume every rental car is compliant. Most are. Some aren’t — especially budget rentals, older fleet vehicles, or cars rented from private platforms. Check at pickup.
Alternatives that actually work
Trams have made a comeback in French cities. Lyon, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Montpellier — they all have modern tram networks that connect suburbs to city centers. The Paris Metro speaks for itself. Single tickets run EUR 1.90-2.10.
French cities mark Park & Ride lots as ‘P+R’ or ‘Relais Tram.’ Usually free parking if you have a transit ticket. City center parking runs EUR 2-3/hour and spaces are scarce.

A notice can still reach your home address, and an unpaid fine can resurface if you drive back.
