Didn’t France abolish its low-emission zones?
No — the repeal never took effect. Parliament did vote in April 2026 to abolish France’s ZFEs, which is why so many guides and news reports say they are gone. The Conseil constitutionnel struck that article down on 21 May 2026 (décision n° 2026-903 DC), so the ZFE provisions of the code général des collectivités territoriales (articles L. 2213-4-1 and L. 2213-4-2) stayed on the books.
One caveat most coverage misses: the article was annulled on procedure, not on its merits — the Council held it was a “cavalier législatif”, an amendment with no link to the bill it was attached to (Constitution, art. 45). Parliament can pass the same repeal again in a properly related bill, so this is settled for now rather than settled for good. Read the decision.

Lorient — Why Nothing Applies Here
Lorient has been listed on travel sites as a ZFE town for years, usually with the Paris timetable of weekdays 08:00 to 20:00 attached to it. That timetable belongs to the Métropole du Grand Paris. Lorient never adopted a zone of its own, and neither of the two sources the French state maintains — the public register and the machine-readable database used by navigation apps — records one.
What That Means on the Road
- Any car may enter, whatever its age, fuel or Crit’Air class.
- No signs to watch for. The round blue ZFE sign with the Crit’Air pictogram is not posted at the approaches to Lorient.
- No day passes, no derogations, no registration. There is no scheme to be admitted to.
If You Are Touring Brittany
Rennes Métropole is the one Breton agglomeration with a zone in force, and its calendar tightens from 1 January 2027, when Crit’Air 5 cars lose access, followed by Crit’Air 4 in 2029 and Crit’Air 3 in 2030. If a Breton loop takes you through Rennes, the disc is worth ordering from certificat-air.gouv.fr at EUR 5.11 — allow two to three weeks for delivery outside France. For Lorient alone, it buys you nothing.
Could a Zone Appear Later?
A French ZFE is created by a local authority order and then appears in the national database that feeds map and routing services. Nothing of the kind has been filed for Lorient Agglomération. Should that change, the register is where it will show up first.
