Umweltzone Limburg · Germany · Active since 2018-01-31
Source: official source · Verified: 2026-09-19
The green Umweltplakette has been required since 31 January 2018, around the clock. Diesel needs Euro 4, or Euro 3 with a filter; petrol only a regulated catalytic converter. Fine: €100.
Locally the zone is called Umweltzone Limburg (Germany) — that is the wording on the boundary signs, on the official portal and on any penalty notice, so it is the phrase to search for once you are there.

The city’s own Umweltzone page dates the zone to 31 January 2018 — late, by German standards, and it went straight to the strictest stage. Only the green Umweltplakette is accepted, all day, every day. That means diesel from Euro 4 (or Euro 3 with a particulate filter) and, on the petrol side, nothing more than a regulated catalytic converter — Euro 1 and up. Drive in without the sticker and the national rate is EUR 100.

Limburg Emission Zone
Limburg an der Lahn is a small town on the A3 between Cologne and Frankfurt, and its Umweltzone exists because of the traffic that passes through it. The federal register lists it as active with a single start date — 31 January 2018 — for all three stages, which is the register’s way of recording a zone that never used the red or yellow steps.
Who gets the green sticker
The threshold is set nationally, not locally. The Umweltbundesamt puts it as diesel Euro 4, or Euro 3 with a particulate filter, and petrol Euro 1 or better with a regulated catalytic converter. That second figure is the one drivers get wrong: a 1990s petrol hatchback with a working cat qualifies, while a 2004 diesel does not.
Getting the sticker
A green Plakette costs roughly €5 to €15 from a TÜV or DEKRA station, a licensed garage or the vehicle registration office, and online orders need about a week. It is a one-off — the sticker stays valid for the life of the vehicle and works in every German Umweltzone, so one purchase covers Limburg, Frankfurt and the Ruhr alike.
Checks and the fine
There are no entry cameras here. Enforcement is by police and municipal checks, including on parked cars, which is why the sticker has to be visible on the windscreen rather than in the glovebox. The federal rate for driving without one is EUR 100 — the city’s page still shows the older €80 figure — and since 2014 no Flensburg point comes with it.
When you can get in anyway
The city lists exemptions for emergency and police vehicles, cars carrying certain disability designations, H-plate classic cars, agricultural machinery, and two- and three-wheelers. Beyond that there is a hardship permit, priced at €20 to €100 by duration, for drivers who can show the vehicle cannot realistically be retrofitted or replaced and that the trip serves an approved purpose such as medical care, work or essential deliveries.
Recent changes to this page
- Electric-car rule brought up to date: from 1 October 2026 a car with a German E-plate, or the blue E badge that foreign-registered EVs can get, needs no green sticker (35. BImSchV Annex 3 no. 11, added by BGBl. 2026 I Nr. 278). An electric car without that marking still needs the sticker.
- Page title now leads with the zone map shown on this page; the rules, hours and figures below are unchanged.
- Verified against the Umweltbundesamt register and limburg.de: the zone came into force on 31 January 2018 at the green-sticker stage (the page said 2013), and the petrol threshold is a regulated catalytic converter — Euro 1 and newer — not Euro 4.
- Title, description and introduction rewritten from this page's own data (no shared template wording).
- Re-verified fine (€100) and requirements against Germany authority portal.
- Confirmed Umweltplakette (Green Sticker) remains mandatory; 2026 ruleset unchanged.
- Updated enforcement procedure notes after seasonal review cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes — the green Umweltplakette, and only the green one. Limburg an der Lahn never ran a red or yellow stage: when the zone came into force on 31 January 2018 the green sticker was already the requirement.
Diesel cars from Euro 4, or Euro 3 fitted with a particulate filter. Petrol cars need a regulated catalytic converter, which covers Euro 1 and everything newer — in practice almost any petrol car first registered from 1993. Battery-electric and fuel-cell cars count as green by law, and an E-plate has replaced the sticker for them since 1 October 2026.
€100, the flat rate the Umweltbundesamt gives for driving in an Umweltzone without a valid sticker. The city's own page still quotes the older €80 figure, which was the rate before the national catalogue was raised. The Flensburg penalty point that once came with it was abolished in 2014.
Emergency, police and fire vehicles, cars carrying certain disability designations, historic vehicles with an H-plate, agricultural machinery, and two- and three-wheelers. The city also issues hardship permits costing roughly €20 to €100 depending on duration, for drivers who can show the vehicle cannot be retrofitted or replaced.
Yes, if the car carries an E-plate or, when registered abroad, the blue E badge: that marking has done the sticker's job since 1 October 2026. An EV without it still sits in the green class and must display the green sticker.
