Didn’t France abolish its low-emission zones?
No — the repeal never took effect. Parliament did vote in April 2026 to abolish France’s ZFEs, which is why so many guides and news reports say they are gone. The Conseil constitutionnel struck that article down on 21 May 2026 (décision n° 2026-903 DC), so the ZFE provisions of the code général des collectivités territoriales (articles L. 2213-4-1 and L. 2213-4-2) stayed on the books.
The zone in Lille is therefore still in force and you still need a Crit'Air vignette on the windscreen. Turning up without one because you read that ZFEs were scrapped is the expensive version of this mistake — the penalty is EUR 68 for light vehicles (cars, motorcycles); EUR 135 for heavy vehicles (trucks, buses).
One caveat most coverage misses: the article was annulled on procedure, not on its merits — the Council held it was a “cavalier législatif”, an amendment with no link to the bill it was attached to (Constitution, art. 45). Parliament can pass the same repeal again in a properly related bill, so this is settled for now rather than settled for good. Read the decision.

Since 1 January 2025 the Métropole Européenne de Lille has closed its roads to the non classés — vehicles registered before 1 January 1997, roughly 6,290 of them in the metropolitan fleet — and it does so permanently, 24 hours a day and seven days a week (lillemetropole.fr). Crit’Air 5 and 4 are untouched. The catch is reach: the zone covers all 95 communes plus the A1, A25, A22, A27, A23 and the N227, N356, N41 and N47.
Your case: There is no night or Sunday window here, so the question is only whether your vehicle has a Crit’Air class at all. Two-wheelers and motor tricycles are excluded from the restriction entirely; for anything else, check the class with the emission zone checker.

Every vehicle circulating in the zone must display a valid Crit’Air sticker, which costs EUR 5.11 with postage from certificat-air.gouv.fr. Driving without one, or in a banned vehicle, brings a fixed fine of EUR 68 for a car or light van and EUR 135 for an HGV, bus or coach (Service-Public.fr).
Before you drive into Lille
- Read the first registration date on the vehicle document — 1997 is the line that matters.
