Kraków’s Strefa Czystego Transportu started on 1 January 2026 and asks for petrol Euro 4 or built 2005 and later, diesel Euro 6 or built 2014 and later. What most summaries leave out is the escape hatch: until 31 December 2028 a car that fails those tests may still drive in on payment — 2.50 zł an hour, or 5 zł to cover the rest of the day once you have paid for two consecutive hours in 2026, or 100 zł for a month. A foreign-registered car must be entered in the SCT system first, whether it complies or not. Enter without any of that and the penalty is up to 500 zł.

Kraków SCT — What the Resolution Actually Says
Uchwała nr XXXII/619/25 of the Rada Miasta Krakowa, adopted on 12 June 2025, established the zone “z dniem 1 stycznia 2026 r.” and “na czas nieoznaczony” — from 1 January 2026, for an indefinite period. Nowhere does it set opening or closing hours, which is why there is no evening or weekend let-off to plan around.
Who Can Enter?

- Diesel up to 3.5 t: at least Euro 6, or built 2014 or later
- Heavy diesel: Euro VI, or built 2012 or later
- Electric vehicles: always allowed
The Paid Transition — the Part Visitors Miss
Paragraph 6 of the resolution lets non-compliant vehicles in on payment between 1 January 2026 and 31 December 2028. The tariff is 2.50 zł per hour; in 2026, paying for two consecutive hours costs 5 zł and covers you to the end of that day. From 1 January 2027 the deal changes: the rest of the day is covered only after six consecutive paid hours, so the daily cap becomes 15 zł. Season tickets run 100 zł a month in 2026, 250 zł in 2027 and 500 zł in 2028. After that the door shuts: from 2029 only compliant vehicles come in from outside.
If Your Car Is Registered Abroad
Registration is not optional. The resolution requires vehicles registered outside Poland to be declared in the SCT system in advance — “musisz samodzielnie zgłosić go do systemu SCT” — supplying a copy of the registration document, the make, model, year of manufacture and emission standard. A compliant Polish car is checked automatically against the national vehicle register; a foreign one is not in that register at all.
Fine for Non-Compliance
Driving in without meeting the standard, paying the fee or holding an exemption is an offence under art. 96c of the Kodeks wykroczeń, punishable by a fine of up to 500 zł, issued by the municipal guard or the police.

Before You Drive Into Kraków

Four figures on this page were wrong: the thresholds are Euro 4 or 2005 for petrol and Euro 6 or 2014 for diesel, not Euro 3 and Euro 5; the resolution sets no hours at all, so the weekday 09:00-17:00 window was invented; the penalty is up to 500 zł under art. 96c of the Kodeks wykroczeń rather than a flat 500 zł; and the paid transition for non-compliant vehicles, which is the part that matters to a visitor, was missing entirely.
