Didn’t France abolish its low-emission zones?
No — the repeal never took effect. Parliament did vote in April 2026 to abolish France’s ZFEs, which is why so many guides and news reports say they are gone. The Conseil constitutionnel struck that article down on 21 May 2026 (décision n° 2026-903 DC), so the ZFE provisions of the code général des collectivités territoriales (articles L. 2213-4-1 and L. 2213-4-2) stayed on the books.
The zone in Grenoble is therefore still in force and you still need a Crit'Air vignette on the windscreen. Turning up without one because you read that ZFEs were scrapped is the expensive version of this mistake — the penalty is EUR 68 / EUR 135, suspended for vehicle class until 30 June 2027; driving with no Crit'Air disc remains a EUR 68 offence.
One caveat most coverage misses: the article was annulled on procedure, not on its merits — the Council held it was a “cavalier législatif”, an amendment with no link to the bill it was attached to (Constitution, art. 45). Parliament can pass the same repeal again in a properly related bill, so this is settled for now rather than settled for good. Read the decision.

Grenoble Emission Zone
The Zone à Faibles Emissions here is really two schemes wearing one name. Cars and powered two-wheelers face the weekday daytime rule described above. Vans and lorries face a wider one: 27 communes, 24 hours a day, Crit’Air 3 and worse excluded since 2 May 2019, with the Crit’Air 2 step pushed back to July 2028.

Which streets are affected?
The car perimeter covers 13 communes in the valley floor, Grenoble itself among them, and excludes the rapid urban routes that skirt the built-up area. Signs at the boundary carry the Crit’Air pictogram with the classes allowed.
The sticker that saves you a fine
Order it before you leave home. Delivery to a non-French address runs two to three weeks, and there is no counter at the border, the motorway services or the petrol station that sells it. French rental cars normally arrive with one already fitted.
What catches people out
Assuming the rule runs all day and all week. It does not — and drivers reroute for nothing on a Sunday afternoon.
Assuming a grace period means no enforcement at all. The class is forgiven until mid-2027; the missing disc is not.
Reading the lorry rules and applying them to a car. The 24/7 zone belongs to vans and lorries.

Yes if you arrive on a weekday between 07:00 and 19:00. The Crit'Air disc must be on the windscreen, and the class it shows has to be 0, 1 or 2 — petrol registered from 2006 (Euro 4) or diesel from 2011 (Euro 5). Outside that window the zone does not apply.
Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 19:00. Grenoble-Alpes Métropole describes the zone as non-permanent: evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays are free for every Crit'Air class. The separate zone for vans and lorries does run 24/7.
Crit'Air 5 since July 2023, Crit'Air 4 since 1 January 2024 and Crit'Air 3 since 1 January 2025, along with cars too old to be classified. No date has been set for Crit'Air 2 cars.
Not for your vehicle's class. The metropole widened its pedagogical period to every vehicle, whatever its sticker, until 30 June 2027. Driving through a signed ZFE with no disc at all is a separate EUR 68 offence and is still enforced.
Grenoble issues a pass covering 12 days a year for occasional journeys. Standing derogations also exist for drivers under 5,000 km a year, shift workers arriving before 06:30 or leaving after 19:30, repeat medical appointments and collection vehicles.
The statutory amounts are EUR 68 for cars, motorcycles and light commercial vehicles and EUR 135 for lorries, buses and coaches. For a rental, the company charges your card plus an admin fee. A notice can reach a foreign address through commercial address-tracing, but there is no automatic EU enforcement: Directive 2015/413 lists eight road-safety offences and emission-zone breaches are not among them.
