Grenoble ZFE 2026: Weekdays 07:00-19:00, No Fines Yet
Zone à Faibles Emissions · France · Active since 2019
Source: official source · Verified: 2026-09-27
Grenoble's car ZFE runs Monday to Friday, 07:00-19:00, across 13 communes and refuses Crit'Air 3, 4, 5 and unclassified cars. No fine is issued for the class itself before 30 June 2027.
Locally the zone is called Zone à Faibles Emissions Grenoble (France) — that is the wording on the boundary signs, on the official portal and on any penalty notice, so it is the phrase to search for once you are there.

Didn’t France abolish its low-emission zones?
No — the repeal never took effect. Parliament did vote in April 2026 to abolish France’s ZFEs, which is why so many guides and news reports say they are gone. The Conseil constitutionnel struck that article down on 21 May 2026 (décision n° 2026-903 DC), so the ZFE provisions of the code général des collectivités territoriales (articles L. 2213-4-1 and L. 2213-4-2) stayed on the books.
The zone in Grenoble is therefore still in force and you still need a Crit'Air vignette on the windscreen. Turning up without one because you read that ZFEs were scrapped is the expensive version of this mistake — the penalty is EUR 68 / EUR 135, suspended for vehicle class until 30 June 2027; driving with no Crit'Air disc remains a EUR 68 offence.
One caveat most coverage misses: the article was annulled on procedure, not on its merits — the Council held it was a “cavalier législatif”, an amendment with no link to the bill it was attached to (Constitution, art. 45). Parliament can pass the same repeal again in a properly related bill, so this is settled for now rather than settled for good. Read the decision.

Grenoble’s ZFE for cars is non-permanent: the metropole states that it “s’applique uniquement du lundi au vendredi de 7h à 19h”. Inside that window, cars with Crit’Air 3, 4, 5 or no class may not circulate. A pedagogical period without fines runs to 30 June 2027 for every vehicle, whatever its sticker — but driving with no vignette at all is still a EUR 68 offence.

Grenoble ZFE — How the Car Rules Work
Two schemes share the name. The one most visitors meet covers private cars and powered two-wheelers across 13 communes and works only on weekday daytimes. The other, in force since 2 May 2019, covers vans and lorries across 27 communes and runs 24 hours a day, every day. Getting the two confused is the usual reason a driver expects a night-time ban that does not exist.
Who Can Enter, and When
- Weekday 07:00–19:00: cars need Crit’Air 2 or better — that is petrol registered from 2006 (Euro 4) or diesel registered from 2011 (Euro 5).
- Evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays: no restriction at all, whatever your class.
- Electric and hydrogen cars carry the Crit’Air 0 disc and are never affected.
The Sticker Still Matters
The vignette costs EUR 5.11 including postage from certificat-air.gouv.fr, the only official issuer. Ordering from abroad takes two to three weeks. The grace period suspends penalties tied to your Crit’Air class — it does not excuse driving through a signed ZFE with no disc on the windscreen, which remains a EUR 68 matter.
Fines and the Grace Period
The statutory amounts are EUR 68 for cars, motorcycles and light commercial vehicles and EUR 135 for lorries, buses and coaches. Until 30 June 2027 the metropole issues none of them on grounds of vehicle class. There is no automatic forwarding of such penalties to a driver’s home country: EU Directive 2015/413 covers eight road-safety offences and emission-zone breaches are not among them.
Derogations Worth Knowing
Grenoble publishes several routes around the rule for a non-compliant car:
- a pass of 12 days a year for occasional journeys;
- low-mileage drivers covering under 5,000 km a year;
- shift workers arriving before 06:30 or leaving after 19:30;
- repeat medical appointments inside the perimeter;
- collection vehicles with historic status.
Before You Drive In
- Read your Crit’Air class off the registration document, or check it on the official portal.
- If it is 3 or worse, aim for an evening, a weekend or a public holiday — the zone is simply off.
- If you must travel midweek, apply for one of the derogations above rather than relying on the grace period.
- Park at a signed P+R on the tram network and finish the trip by tram; the centre is compact. How the P+R barrier works with a tram ticket is explained in getting around Grenoble by car.
Recent changes to this page
- Crit'Air sticker price corrected to EUR 5.11 for a foreign-registered car (EUR 3.108 certificate + EUR 2.00 postage, certificat-air.gouv.fr price service); EUR 3.85 applies only to French plates.
- Hours corrected against the metropole's own page for private cars: the zone is non-permanent and applies only Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 19:00, not 24/7 and not 08:00-20:00. The petrol floor is Euro 4 (Crit'Air 2), not Euro 3; the start year in the key facts read 2025 against a body text saying 2019. Added the Crit'Air phase-out dates, the 13-commune car perimeter, the separate 27-commune van and lorry zone, the derogations, and the fact that a missing vignette is still fined during the pedagogical period. Removed the claim that these fines are forwarded under the EU cross-border directive.
