Erice ZTL — the two zones
Ordinance 309 of 15 July 2024 defines the rossa zone along Via Vittorio Emanuele, Piazza Madrice, Piazza della Loggia, Via Guarrasi, Via Garibaldi, Via San Domenico, Via Butera and Via Guarnotti, and the verde zone around it, bounded by Viale Conte Pepoli, Via Badalucco, Via San Francesco, Via Gervasi, Via Dott. Cusenza, Viale Nunzio Nasi, Piazzetta del Carmine, Via Rabatà and Piazza Grammatico. In both, driving and parking are barred to every vehicle that does not hold a Pass.
Who gets in without a pass
The ordinance lists the categories admitted at any hour:
- Emergency services — police, fire brigade, forestry corps, civil protection, ambulances
- Vehicles serving people with disabilities
- Taxis and NCC hire cars
- Vehicles belonging to accommodation businesses, solely to carry guests, and only in the green zone
- Doctors on emergency home visits, displaying the visit badge
- Repair trades — plumbers, electricians, water tankers — for urgent work, cleared in advance by the municipal police on 0923 502200
- Vehicles authorised for events, weddings or filming, notified to the municipal police beforehand
Note what is not on that list: there is no tourist self-registration. If you are staying inside the zone, the hotel’s own vehicle can carry you in — your hire car cannot follow it.
Streets closed to everyone
Via S. Filippo, Via Anchise, Via Deserta, Vico Balio, the alley off Via P. Gervasi, Viale del Castello di Venere and the Via Roma extension to the Balio are closed to all traffic, as are Piazza Madrice and Vicolo Toscano.
Size limits
Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes may not enter either ZTL, the only exception being emergency water supply. Motorhomes, caravans and coaches are stopped from the municipal police post at Piazzale Porta Trapani and along the whole of Viale Conte Pepoli; scheduled buses are let through in the winter months.
What a violation costs
The ordinance sets no local tariff. Unauthorised entry is penalised under the Codice della Strada, and cameras log foreign plates through the rental company.
Tips for visitors
- Park at Porta Trapani and take the funicular or walk — the centre is ten minutes across
- If you have booked inside the zone, ask the property to collect you rather than assuming your own car can follow
- In high summer, do not plan an evening arrival by car into the red zone: it is shut from 11:00 until 02:00
