Cortona runs three limited-traffic zones, and the two that matter to visitors keep different clocks. The comune’s disciplinare sets ZTL Rossa at 10:00-20:00 from 1 October to 30 April and 10:00-04:00 from 1 May to 30 September — an all-but-overnight closure through the tourist season. Three zones, not one
Most listings describe a single Cortona ZTL. The ordinances cover ZTL Rossa, ZTL Gialla, and a third zone taking in via Benedetti, piazza Pescheria, vicolo Boni, via Passerini and via dell’Amorino. Which one your destination falls in decides which timetable applies to you.
The hours that catch people out
Inside the active hours, the disciplinare prohibits both transit and parking, for all vehicles, except the categories set out in its technical schedules. Note what that means in July: the Rossa zone does not reopen at dinner time. It stays closed from 10:00 straight through to 04:00 the next morning.
Winter is easier in the Gialla zone, which shuts only over lunch and the early evening, but the Rossa zone still holds a full 10:00-20:00 day.
Who gets in
Access is by authorisation, tied to the categories in the technical schedules rather than to what you drive:
- Residents of the Rossa or Gialla zone
- Owners and long-term occupants of property inside the zone, and holders of a private parking space
- Businesses based in the zone — for commercial permit-holders the disciplinare allows transit only between 15:00 and 16:00
- Disabled badge holders under art. 381 DPR 495/1992
- Vehicles authorised for deliveries, works and similar

If you get it wrong
The comune publishes no ZTL tariff of its own, so the national band applies: Codice della Strada art. 7 c.14, EUR 83-332. Cameras at the gates are ministerially authorised, and the notice goes to the registered keeper — or, for a hire car, to the rental company, which passes it on with an administrative fee.
Before you drive up
- Work out which of the three zones your address sits in before you set off, not at the gate.
- Check the month: the 1 May and 1 October switch changes the picture completely.
- If you are staying in the centre, give your plate to the accommodation in advance so it can be registered.
- Otherwise park below the walls. The historic centre is steep and compact, and it is a better walk than a drive.
