Didn’t France abolish its low-emission zones?
No — the repeal never took effect. Parliament did vote in April 2026 to abolish France’s ZFEs, which is why so many guides and news reports say they are gone. The Conseil constitutionnel struck that article down on 21 May 2026 (décision n° 2026-903 DC), so the ZFE provisions of the code général des collectivités territoriales (articles L. 2213-4-1 and L. 2213-4-2) stayed on the books.
One caveat most coverage misses: the article was annulled on procedure, not on its merits — the Council held it was a “cavalier législatif”, an amendment with no link to the bill it was attached to (Constitution, art. 45). Parliament can pass the same repeal again in a properly related bill, so this is settled for now rather than settled for good. Read the decision.

Compiègne and the French ZFE map

That directory lists 25 zones à faibles émissions: Grand Annecy, Annemasse, Clermont Auvergne, Grenoble Alpes, Lyon, Saint-Étienne, Dijon, Rennes, Grand Nancy, Grand Reims, Strasbourg, Lille, Grand Paris, Bordeaux, Pau, Caen la Mer, Le Havre Seine, Rouen Normandie, Montpellier Méditerranée, Nîmes, Toulouse, Aix-Marseille-Provence, Nice Côte d’Azur, Angers Loire and Nantes (Mieux respirer en ville). Compiègne appears nowhere in it, and the Agglomération de la Région de Compiègne publishes no low-emission regulation of its own.
Who can enter
Everyone. Petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric vehicles are treated identically in Compiègne, because there is no emission perimeter to cross and no Euro threshold written into any local rule.
Vignette
None needed for Compiègne. A Crit’Air sticker is still a sensible purchase if your route continues to one of the 25 listed agglomerations — order it only from certificat-air.gouv.fr, never from a reseller charging a markup.
Enforcement
No ZFE cameras, no perimeter signs, no Euro-class checks. Ordinary parking, speed and access rules apply as they do in any French town, and none of them turn on your vehicle’s emission standard.
What to do instead
If you were planning your trip around a Compiègne restriction, you can stop. The planning that does matter happens further along the route: Paris, Lille, Rouen and Reims all run real ZFEs with real penalties, and each sets its own minimum Crit’Air class. Check the perimeter and the current class for the city you are actually driving into, then buy one vignette that covers the whole trip.
Common traps
A ZFE listed for a town that has none usually comes from a project announcement, a regional air-quality plan, or a mix-up with a nearby agglomeration. The reliable test is the government directory: if the name is not in it, there is no zone.
Crit’Air resellers are the second trap. Several sites sell the sticker at four or five times the official price. The certificate is issued by the state and costs the same to every applicant, French-registered or foreign.
