Quick Answer

Chalon-sur-Saône has no ZFE. Dijon Métropole is the only Burgundy agglomeration in the state register of 25 French zones, so no Crit'Air class is refused entry at Chalon.

Didn’t France abolish its low-emission zones?

No — the repeal never took effect. Parliament did vote in April 2026 to abolish France’s ZFEs, which is why so many guides and news reports say they are gone. The Conseil constitutionnel struck that article down on 21 May 2026 (décision n° 2026-903 DC), so the ZFE provisions of the code général des collectivités territoriales (articles L. 2213-4-1 and L. 2213-4-2) stayed on the books.

One caveat most coverage misses: the article was annulled on procedure, not on its merits — the Council held it was a “cavalier législatif”, an amendment with no link to the bill it was attached to (Constitution, art. 45). Parliament can pass the same repeal again in a properly related bill, so this is settled for now rather than settled for good. Read the decision.

Chalon-sur-Saône does not operate a zone à faibles émissions. In Bourgogne-Franche-Comté the state register records a single one, at Dijon Métropole. No camera or patrol at Chalon looks for a Crit’Air class, and no penalty exists to collect.

Chalon-sur-Saône — What Drivers Actually Face

The older listings for this town borrowed a set of rules wholesale: a weekday window, a Euro 5 diesel floor, even an exemption for farm vehicles. Those details belong to French ZFE practice in general, not to Chalon, where the underlying zone was never established. With roughly 45,000 residents in the commune and about 110,000 across Le Grand Chalon, it also sits well under the 150,000-inhabitant mark that drove the national ZFE rollout.

Driving In

  • No Crit’Air disc is required to enter or park in Chalon-sur-Saône.
  • No zone signage — the blue ZFE panel with its Crit’Air pictogram is not posted on the approaches.
  • No derogation to apply for, because there is no restriction to be excused from.

Dijon: Registered, but Not Restricting Anyone Yet

If your route north picks up the A31 towards Dijon, that is where Burgundy’s only registered zone sits. Dijon Métropole has placed its ZFE-m under a general derogation that covers every vehicle, so no Crit’Air class is turned away there today either. A vignette only matters if you continue to a French city whose zone is actually enforced. It is sold on the state site, certificat-air.gouv.fr, for EUR 5.11 including postage to a foreign address, and delivery abroad takes two to three weeks. Anyone selling it faster, or dearer, is a reseller.

Watch This Space, Lightly

French zones are created by local order and then filed into the national database that navigation apps read. Nothing has been filed for Chalon. If that ever changes, the register and the dataset above will show it before the signs go up.

Recent changes to this page

  • The Dijon section no longer tells readers to buy a Crit'Air sticker for Dijon: Dijon Métropole has put its ZFE-m under a general derogation covering every vehicle, so its start is in effect postponed. The sticker is now presented as needed only for French zones that are enforced.
  • Crit'Air sticker price corrected to EUR 5.11 for a foreign-registered car (EUR 3.108 certificate + EUR 2.00 postage, certificat-air.gouv.fr price service); EUR 3.85 applies only to French plates.
  • Status corrected from active to no zone. This page described a Crit'Air scheme running weekdays 08:00-20:00 with a diesel Euro 5 floor, an agricultural-vehicle exemption and a EUR 68 penalty. None of it exists: Chalon-sur-Saône appears neither in the state register of 25 French ZFEs nor in the national consolidated ZFE database, and Le Grand Chalon publishes no such scheme. Fine, Euro thresholds and hours removed, along with the sticker and zone checkers.
  • Title, description and introduction rewritten from this page's own data (no shared template wording).
  • Re-verified fine (EUR 68 (cars), EUR 135 (lorries)) and requirements against France authority portal.
  • Confirmed Crit'Air vignette required remains mandatory; 2026 ruleset unchanged.
  • Updated enforcement procedure notes after seasonal review cycle.
