- Motorcycles and three-wheelers, which the rules exclude outright, along with work machines, farm tractors, registered classics, vehicles for disabled drivers and emergency vehicles
The sticker
The green Umweltplakette costs about EUR 5-15. Order it online from umwelt-plakette.de, or collect one from a TÜV or DEKRA station or a Zulassungsstelle. Online takes about a week; in person you walk out with it. It never expires, and it is valid in every German Umweltzone — the classification is national, not municipal.
German hire cars almost always carry one already, but the driver is responsible for it, so check the windscreen before you leave the lot.

EUR 100, flat. The Umweltbundesamt states that driving in an Umweltzone without a Plakette or an individual exemption is an administrative offence currently penalised at EUR 100. The Flensburg point that used to accompany it was dropped in 2014.

Alternatives that work
