Thinking the zone is just the pedestrian center. German Umweltzonen are much larger than pedestrian zones — they cover entire neighborhoods, not just shopping streets.
Ignoring it because you didn’t see a barrier. Most modern emission zones use cameras, not gates. No barrier doesn’t mean no enforcement.
Rental car assumption. People assume every rental car is compliant. Most are. Some aren’t — especially budget rentals, older fleet vehicles, or cars rented from private platforms. Check at pickup.
Buying a yellow or red sticker. Only green works. The other colors haven’t been valid in any German city for years. If someone sells you a yellow one, they’re selling you a fine.
