Sticker & Registration

Fine for Non-Compliance

Driving in the Umweltzone without meeting the requirements will result in a fine of EUR 100.

Berlin’s Umweltzone covers everything inside the S-Bahn ring — which means most places a tourist would actually want to go. The rule is simple: no green sticker, no entry. And the police do check.

What the zone covers

Every road entering the zone has a green sign. Miss it and you’re liable — though in practice, police checks happen inside the zone, not at the boundary. The Autobahn is exempt.

Before you drive in

Get the green Umweltplakette before you enter. EUR 5-15 from umwelt-plakette.de or any vehicle inspection station.

Don’t bother looking for it at gas stations — some have it, most don’t. Order online or go to a TUV. If you’re renting, the car should already have one. Should.

The expensive mistakes

Driving through ‘just quickly.’ Cameras don’t care about your intentions. Enter the zone for 30 seconds or 3 hours — the fine is the same.

Thinking the zone is just the pedestrian center. German Umweltzonen are much larger than pedestrian zones — they cover entire neighborhoods, not just shopping streets.

Planning to deal with it later. By the time the fine arrives — often weeks after your trip — it’s too late to dispute and the admin fees have piled up.

Buying a yellow or red sticker. Only green works. The other colors haven’t been valid in any German city for years. If someone sells you a yellow one, they’re selling you a fine.

Leave the car outside

German public transit is excellent. U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams, buses — they all connect. The Deutschland-Ticket costs EUR 49/month and works on every local transit system in the country. Even for a week-long visit, it’s worth it.

Most German cities have P+R lots at suburban S-Bahn stations. Park for EUR 1-3/day and take the train in. City center garages cost EUR 2-4/hour — a full day adds up fast.

Consider renting a bike. In Berlin, it’s often the fastest way to get around the center — no parking hassles, no emission zone worries.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Umweltzone in Berlin requires: Green Umweltplakette. Minimum Euro standard is any petrol car with a regulated catalytic converter (Euro 1 and newer) and Euro 4 for diesel vehicles.

Check emission zone requirements

The fine for driving in Berlin's Umweltzone without the required sticker or with a non-compliant vehicle is EUR 100.

Check emission zone requirements

Yes, electric vehicles (BEVs) and most plug-in hybrids are exempt from emission zone restrictions in Berlin.

Check emission zone requirements

No. There's no transit exemption. If your wheels are inside the zone boundary, you're subject to the rules. Even brief trips through the zone count.

Check if your licence is valid

Major agencies keep their cars compliant. Budget and peer-to-peer rentals? Less certain. Verify at pickup — ask to see the sticker or registration confirmation.

The fine (EUR 100) applies to everyone — locals and tourists alike. For rental cars, the rental company charges your credit card plus an admin fee (usually EUR 20-50). For personal vehicles, the fine gets sent to your registered address. A notice can still reach your home address, because authorities use commercial address-tracing services. What does not exist is automatic EU enforcement — Directive 2015/413 covers only eight road-safety offences and emission-zone violations are not among them.

Maybe. Some gas stations near major cities sell the Umweltplakette, but many don't. Don't count on it. TUV/DEKRA stations are a sure thing. Online ordering takes about a week.
