There is no ZFE in Belfort. The agglomeration is below the 150,000-inhabitant threshold for the French scheme and appears in no official list of zones, so no Crit'Air sticker and no fine apply.
Didn’t France abolish its low-emission zones?
No — the repeal never took effect. Parliament did vote in April 2026 to abolish France’s ZFEs, which is why so many guides and news reports say they are gone. The Conseil constitutionnel struck that article down on 21 May 2026 (décision n° 2026-903 DC), so the ZFE provisions of the code général des collectivités territoriales (articles L. 2213-4-1 and L. 2213-4-2) stayed on the books.
One caveat most coverage misses: the article was annulled on procedure, not on its merits — the Council held it was a “cavalier législatif”, an amendment with no link to the bill it was attached to (Constitution, art. 45). Parliament can pass the same repeal again in a properly related bill, so this is settled for now rather than settled for good. Read the decision.

Belfort — no Zone à Faibles Émissions
France runs its low-emission zones city by city, each created by a local arrêté and each obliged to publish its perimeter, its Crit’Air thresholds and its hours into a single national dataset. That dataset is the fastest way to settle whether a town has a zone: if the polygon is not in it, there is nothing to comply with. Belfort’s is not there, and Belfort is absent from the ministry’s own list of the 25 active French ZFEs.
Why the rule does not reach here
The French framework applies to agglomerations of more than 150,000 inhabitants. Grand Belfort is a long way below that, which leaves it outside both categories the ministry uses — the handful of territories that exceed air-quality limits and face a binding calendar, and the larger “territoires de vigilance” that must restrict something. Belfort is in neither.
Who can drive in
Every vehicle, of any age, fuel or Crit’Air class. There is no perimeter, no sign to watch for, no sticker to display and no penalty.
If the rest of your trip is in France
This is the part worth getting right, because the Crit’Air system is national even though the zones are not. A vignette costs EUR 5.11 from certificat-air.gouv.fr and takes around three weeks to reach an address abroad — there is no counter, no border kiosk and no express option. If your route includes Lyon, Paris, Strasbourg, Grenoble or any other city with a live ZFE, order it well before you leave. Just do not order it for Belfort’s sake.
Reading French zone news carefully
Coverage of French ZFEs swings between “they are being abolished” and “they are spreading”. Both were true of something in 2026: Parliament did vote to scrap them, and the Conseil constitutionnel did reinstate the framework weeks later by striking the provision out of the law. None of it changed Belfort’s position, because Belfort never had a zone to lose.
