Ascoli Piceno ZTL — Zona a Traffico Limitato
The travertine centre of Ascoli Piceno, Piazza del Popolo included, sits behind a camera-controlled ZTL. What decides whether you may pass is the list of authorised plates, not your car’s emission standard — a 2024 diesel and a 2005 petrol are treated exactly alike.
The two bands
Fascia Ampia (wide band). Restricted 09:00-12:45 and 15:30-05:00. Open to everyone 05:00-09:00 and 12:45-15:30 — a morning slot and a mid-afternoon slot, and nothing in between.
Fascia Ridotta (reduced band). Restricted 20:30-05:00 on working days, which in Italy include Saturday, and for the full 24 hours on Sundays and public holidays. From Monday to Saturday you can drive in freely between 05:00 and 20:30.
Parking is a separate matter: inside the ZTL, spaces stay reserved for authorised vehicles around the clock, even in the hours when driving through is open to all.
Who can enter
- Residents and businesses holding a permit issued by the comune
- Hotel and B&B guests — the accommodation registers the plate on the guest’s behalf
- Disabled badge holders, for up to three vehicles; a badge issued by another comune needs an application with a copy of the badge attached
- Loading and unloading, with a temporary permit obtained from the Saba parking office
- Motorcycles and scooters, without any permit at all
Vehicles with a fully laden mass above 3,500 kg are excluded from the ZTL at every hour of every day, in both bands.
What it costs to get it wrong
The comune does not publish a municipal figure for ZTL entries. The penalty that applies is the statutory one in article 7, comma 14 of the Codice della Strada: EUR 83 to EUR 332 (Normattiva). Paid promptly, the charge settles at the bottom of that range; contested and lost, it climbs.
Tips for visitors
- Work out which band your destination sits in before you set off — the two clocks are genuinely different, and the reduced band’s all-day Sunday and holiday closure catches people out
- If you are staying in the centre, have your accommodation add the plate before you arrive rather than after
- Arriving on a scooter removes the problem entirely
- A hire car with a low-emission badge buys you nothing here; only a registered plate does
