The day pass, in practice
Buy it at the Polizia Locale front office in via Setteponti 66 and the plate goes on the white list for that day. Prices run EUR 15 for category L, M1 and N1 vehicles, EUR 18 for N2, and EUR 10 for an electric car. Extended temporary permits cost EUR 20 for N1, EUR 25 for N2 and EUR 8 for hotels and accommodation businesses. Exemptions from payment exist for some categories.
Fines
Unauthorised entry is caught by the gate cameras and penalised under the Highway Code, in the usual Italian ZTL band of EUR 83-332, reduced by 30% if paid within five days. Notices reach foreign-registered vehicles and rental companies alike.
Tips for visitors
- Ask your hotel first. If it sits inside ZTL A or ZTL B it can register your plate online, and that is the cheapest route in.
- Watch the midday gap in ZTL A. The day-pass window closes at 12:00, so a lunchtime arrival is often better parked outside the walls.
- Evenings in summer are for walking. Between mid-May and mid-September the Friday and Saturday pedestrian zone extends from 19:00, and Via Roma closes half an hour earlier.
