Two rules matter in Amalfi. On the SS163 an alternate-plate scheme runs 10:00-18:00 on set dates; in the town the historic centre is a permit ZTL, not an emission zone.
The alternate-plate scheme on the SS163 exempts guests of hotels and other accommodation who hold a confirmed booking, but only for the journeys needed to arrive and depart — not for day trips along the coast once you are there.

The rule that actually decides whether you reach Amalfi by car is not the ZTL but the alternate-plate scheme on the Statale 163 Amalfitana, applied under Anas ordinance no. 340/2019. On the dates it covers, between 10:00 and 18:00, an odd-numbered date bars plates ending in an odd digit and an even date bars even-ending plates (Comune di Amalfi). For 2026 the comune announced it for 30 March to 6 April and again 24 April to 2 May. Outside 10:00-18:00 the road is open to everyone, and two-wheelers are not covered at all.

Amalfi — the SS163 plate scheme
The Statale 163 is the only practical road along the coast, which is why the plate rule bites harder than any town-centre restriction. Between 10:00 and 18:00 on an announced date, the last numeric digit of your plate decides whether you may drive it. Outside that window the limitation does not apply.

- Vehicles serving a holder of a disabled badge, provided the holder is on board
- Taxis and chauffeur hire (NCC)

Separately from the coast road, the historic centre is a permit and residency zone. Access is granted by authorisation — a contrassegno issued by the comune — and cameras read plates at the entry points. A recent, cleaner or electric car has no automatic right of entry.

Entering without a permit

Practical order of operations
- Check whether your travel dates fall inside an announced alternate-plate period, and whether your booking exempts you.
- If not exempt, plan to be on the SS163 before 10:00 or after 18:00.
- Ask your accommodation to register the plate for the town ZTL before you arrive.
