The standard, by vehicle type
The Scottish standards are set nationally, so what applies in Aberdeen applies in Glasgow too:
- Cars and vans — Euro 4 petrol, Euro 6 diesel.
- Buses, coaches and HGVs — Euro VI diesel, Euro IV petrol.
- Motorbikes, mopeds and fully electric vehicles — outside the restrictions altogether.

The penalty ladder
The first notice is £60, reduced to £30 if paid within 14 days. After that the amount doubles for each further breach by the same vehicle in the same zone inside a rolling 90-day window — £120, £240 — until it hits £480 for a car or light goods vehicle, or £960 for a minibus, bus, coach or HGV. Once 90 days pass with no further breach, the ladder resets to £60. However many times you cross the boundary in a day, only one notice can be issued for that zone that day.
Exemptions worth knowing
Emergency and military vehicles are exempt, as are showman’s vehicles registered with the council. A historic vehicle qualifies if it was built or registered at least 30 years ago, is no longer in production and has been preserved without substantial technical modification. Blue Badge holders and disabled tax class vehicles are covered, but a non-compliant vehicle has to have the exemption registered before the trip.
Where visitors go wrong
Treating it like an English CAZ. There is no charge to pay, so “I’ll sort it online tonight” is not an option here — the only outcome available after the fact is the penalty.
Ignoring it because there is no barrier. The zone is camera-enforced; nothing physically stops you entering.
