Aalborg is the one Danish zone with a route built for vehicles that cannot comply. Aalborg Emission Zone
Aalborg has run a miljøzone since 2010, one of five in Denmark alongside København, Frederiksberg, Odense and Aarhus. For most of that time it was a heavy-vehicle measure. The change that affects an ordinary visitor came on 1 October 2023, when diesel passenger cars were brought in: from that date a diesel car may not legally be used in the zone without a particulate filter or Euro 5 (miljoezoner.dk).

This is the detail worth knowing before you plan a route north. No motorway lies inside a Danish miljøzone, but Aalborg sits on the Limfjord, and when the Limfjordstunnelen is closed the alternative is the Limfjordsbroen — inside the zone. So the portal designates Vesterbro and Strandvejen, from the west of the city to the bridge, as transit routes that a non-compliant vehicle may use. Abnormal loads that are barred from the tunnel may use them too. It is a corridor, not a pardon: anywhere else inside the boundary, the rules stand.
Registration for foreign plates
Nothing to buy and nothing to display. An older foreign diesel does have to be registered online first — a car or minibus first registered before 1 January 2011, a van before 1 September 2016, a lorry or bus before 1 January 2015. Registration is free, takes effect as soon as you finish it, and runs for five years. You will need the registration certificate, proof of the Euro class if the certificate does not show it, and, if you are relying on a filter, a declaration from a garage, workshop or authority issued no more than 18 months earlier, in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish or English.
Fine for Non-Compliance
DKK 1,500 for a car, van or minibus; DKK 12,500 for a lorry or bus; reduced to DKK 1,000 if documentation of compliance reaches Miljøstyrelsen within 80 days. Notices are issued weekly for as long as the vehicle keeps being used in the zone, and separately for each miljøzone entered — so the cost of ignoring it does not stay flat.
Getting around without driving
Park outside the boundary and continue on foot or by bus — Aalborg’s centre is compact and the waterfront is walkable end to end.

No. Denmark does not issue a miljøzone sticker at all, and nothing goes on the windscreen. The national portal describes the control as automatic: cameras read the number plate and check it against the vehicle register. Only the vehicle's Euro class or a fitted particulate filter decides whether it may be there.

If you later send Miljøstyrelsen documentation that the vehicle did meet the requirements, within 80 days of the notice, the DKK 1,500 is reduced to DKK 1,000.
